Beautifully written, thank you for such a thoughtful review.

I overlooked the stars. I've corrected that by giving it three stars which for me means that it's well written and I liked it, but it didn't knock my socks off. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for your comment. I've decided to use this reply to add an additional thought that I didn't include in my review. What about veterans from other countries and other wars? This book is about a small segment of the wounded total.

Sometimes getting the fist sentence written in a review is the most difficult part of the writing. Thanks for your appreciation.
Wonderful review, Cliff. My Dad was an engineer assigned to the army bomb detonator squad in the Pacific. Every July 4th, he would huddle in our one air conditioned room with our dog and wait for the fire works to end.

Thanks for your comment. I'm sure there are many similar stories. I once asked a WWII veteran if he ever considered touring Europe where he had served. He told me it was the last place he wanted to visit.
Thanks for the thorough review, Cliff. Although the book is on my radar to pick up over the next few months.....I'm curious why it wasn't in the 5-star category for you? Also, regarding your anecdote about the cabinet maker....I had a similar experience with a neighbor struggling with PTSD, as his entire platoon had been wiped out at Guadalcanal.

I don't give many 5 stars. 3 means I like it, 4 means I really liked, and 5 means that its was so emotionally moving that it brought tears to my eyes.
An excellent review of a story too long overlooked. When I was a kid my father would sometimes take me to the VFW lodge, and every time there was a group of men huddled in a back corner, not speaking, with empty beer bottles covering the table and spilling onto the floor. When I asked my dad about them, he said, "War is hell. The ones who have seen the worst things are never the same. Be nice to those men, and do not ask them what they did in the war." Many of them were dead before their 50s, and my father would always attend the funerals.

I wondered while writing my review if it might spark some stories from others. Indeed it has.
