I tried to get my novel published by traditional publishers. I found that neither literary agents nor publishers will take on fiction books that are set in Israel. Has anyone else come across this?

I ended up self-publishing my books. My first book was a novel based on what happened to my mother's family between 1936 and 1945 (my mother, my grandmother, and other family members were in the resistance). Then I started writing historical crime fiction set in Venice in the 1900s. The investigative lawyer and her family are Jewish (again, inspired by my mother's family). When I was looking for an agent for my first book (The Dressmaker's Parcels) I had one agent telling me that "Nobody wants to read books about Jews", well that book sold 500 copies despite my crappy promotion.

Considering the situation that traditional publishing is almost closed to Jewish and Israeli writers, forgive me for asking, but why is there so little activity here?

some are funny, some are deep, some adventures and some nostalgic tales of old times.... there is something for everybody.
