deb ~let my soul float away~ Deborah Ditz

dms are a good way for us to connect, communicate, and grow friendships and not the quick fix to a problem your trying to solve

zeinab ⟢ [semi-ia] zeinab: bc it’s so much more practical cmon now

♡Aru ~WITHOUT YOU I CAN'T BREATHEE~♡ arru: pms are just better like duh?? common sense. hello?

。.•*¨*•♬✧maeve ✧♬•*¨*•.。 most apps have direct messages- they help us to connect with other book lovers and make friends, find new recommendations, and more!!!!!! we NEED direct messages. buddy reads also?!

˗ˏˋ Taryn ˎˊ˗ Taryn Roemen

I’ve made such amazing friends through getting to know them in DMs. And I’m not always comfortable talking to a person in a group where other people can see. It’s an amazing way to connect

abby_theater_nerd abby: its so much easier if you want/need to talk to someone for advice or something one-on-one

Liv {Semi ia⋅˚୨୧} Liv:

Because I like to freaking talk to people during buddy reads or when my life is crashing out :) if you take that away gr people I will most likely become depressed again and kms 💋 so tysm guys

lilly ♡ (comment restriction) lilly: really good for reaching out plus buddy reads. i agree w taryn

Readergirl (aka Izzy){the secret history's ver} Pms are a vital aspect of Goodreads experience. Removing msgs feature removes a very crucial attraction of the platform. It allows us to create unforgettable bookish bonds that no alternative can replace. I hope the Goodreads team takes serious action to curb this measure or it will not end well.

Keysha YES!

message 12: by vxmpslibrary (new)

vxmpslibrary Vxmp- because it is a much better way to communicate with easily accessible and we don't have to run from comments to comment to talk about something

message 13: by james (new)

james !! YES IT NEEDS TO STAY

Anvesha ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ Anvesha

I am not very active in groups sometimes so DMs are the only place where I can interact with my friends. It's just way better than talking in group chats where everyone can see your messages. GR HAS TO BRING BACK PMS.

message 15: by chehed ౨ৎ (new)

chehed ౨ৎ chehed: sometimes talking privately with someone is much easier than posting it somewhere where everyone can see

message 16: by Rowan (new)

Rowan Rowan: it’s a great way to connect with people and it’s easier than trying to have a conversation with one person in a public topic.

Dee ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ LeLoup Sadie

Easy to use to talk to friends and meet new friends, DMs were how I met my 1st friend on Goodreads

message 18: by Aanz ᝰ.ᐟ (new)

Aanz ᝰ.ᐟ [ HIATUS] Aanvi

I want to interact with people to discuss stuff and to do buddy reads

message 19: by maryam (new)

maryam maryam: because I like interacting with people, & making new friends. & because I have buddy reads to get to.

Barnette ⋆˙⟡ [my girlfriend's version] -Barnette

As a moderator of many large groups, PMs are necessary for me to ask specific members questions, make them aware of strikes, organize, etc. I literally don't know how I'm going to run The Debate Club and others without PMs.

message 21: by lauren ౨ৎ (new)

lauren ౨ৎ Lauren- direct messages are important to stay connected to the friends we made on here! it makes it easier to talk more in depth about books and bonding on things beyond books. messages is essential for this site/app.

Hannahhh ;) [free palestine] Hannah
They play a huge part in making goodreads the community we know and love. They allow for readers to interact, buddy read, discuss books and so much more. Without private messages, goodreads won’t be the space it always has been and people will simply move onto using other apps

Readergirl (aka Izzy){the secret history's ver} The private msgs option allows us readers to form close bond and offer each other advice and support even outside reading. It has helped us form real bonds and real friendships. Taking this away curbs our right to free speech and expression.

thea. (finnick’s version) thea: because it’s the most effective way to yap with other readers/buddy read etccc and i don’t think i should even explain that goodreads is pissing me off sm i met so many wonderful people thanks to this app AAAAND GUESS WHAT ELSE ? — DMS

amiya જ⁀➴ ♡ amiya

i've read so many messages that people don't have friends in their lives that love reading and Goodreads provides that for us !! it provides a safe space to discuss books without shame, make new friends, buddy read, vent, and overall find like-minded people who love books/reading as much as them. I started getting into this app more in August and I love this community so much, they shouldn't be allowed to take it from us !

⚡︎bre [matchin’ w my twin]⚡︎ Bre- I’d probably be dead by now without private messages. They can really really help people who need to talk.

corrine ⋆·˚ ༘ * corrine: it's honestly a good way to one on one connect <3

message 28: by Allyson (new)

Because it’s helps us bond and have real relationships in a safe space where they actually support you and share the same interests. And it’s just practical for a community to be able to communicate.

swami ༉‧₊˚ [uni ia] Swami: dms are literally the best way to discuss about books and interact with friends

Eleanor ( but please call me nor ) Muppet Hannah

I’ve never had such a good place to make friends and have the same interests that I do if Goodreads gets rid of pms we won’t have these good connections anymore😞 I want pms to stay.

message 31: by Arianna (new)

Arianna Arianna
DMs are just so much more practical and easier to get ahold of someone, rather than in a group

Pierce Samuel ✞︎ (My Girlfriend's Ver.) Pierce - Because it helps everyone connect better

Syd (dazai’s ver.) Sydney

I need them to stay in contact with friends, buddy reads. I also help run groups and sometimes I need to contact certain individuals.

message 34: by CandiCane (last edited Dec 02, 2025 07:50AM) (new)

CandiCane candi:

I have some friends who use this app as their only source to message me. It would be a shame that deleting pms will cut our social time, buddy reads, deep discussions and literally the whole appeal to goodreads. I want pms to stay!

message 35: by trix (new)

trix trix
why is this even up for debate?? what's the point of goodreads without interacting??

message 36: by kay ೃ⁀➷ (new)

kay ೃ⁀➷ kayley
because we do buddy reads together and having a buddy read with a friend is much better than with a group in some cases and with DM we can’t do that

message 37: by AndaReadsTooMuch (new)

AndaReadsTooMuch Andareadstoomuch

DMs are how I connect with upcoming authors and discuss ARC reads and fellow chaotic mood readers. I’ve connected with an incredible reader community that has opened up my TBR and built a varied library of work that I would not have been exposed to otherwise. You’re taking away the opportunity for readers to connect away from authors in the safe space. Discussion is imperative to the reading process and to readers. But if you’re not willing to foster that space, then you need to change the name of this app and platform. Because it’s clearly NOT for readers.

message 38: by Ayeza (new)

Ayeza Ayeza: I like interacting with people here on Goodreads and one of the reasons I have such good friends here is because of direct messages so Goodreads better not take that feature away!!

Emily ✞ || [fallon's vrs] (cww hiatus) Emily - I need dms to stay for future buddy reads. it helps me discuss books on a deeper level with friends. it helps me encourage other readers in many ways of their lives. it helps with interaction and makes interacting with friends more efficient and helps me focus on a single user when in a discussion

message 40: by Ayeza (new)

Tori {🩷LovesReadingRomance🩷} Tori

Buddy reads and finding and connecting with new friends

message 42: by vita ౨ৎ (new)

vita ౨ৎ —— vita: because that's the main purpose of the app: to interact with people and make new friends. it's more private to write to your friends via dms than in updates or reviews :(

I need DMs!I need it to do buddy reads, message privately with friends, and it makes GR so much better!!!PLS DONT STOP DMS!!!!!

message 45: by mona ♡ (new)

mona ♡ mona - because direct messages are the easiest way to contact friends who may only be able to use goodreads to communicate

Szee Ning (semi-inactive) Szee Ning

I can’t believe we have to explain why DMs should stay… GR should explain why they’re removing it. DMs are just a better way for us to connect with everyone and meet cool people. And obviously for buddy reads too!

a_p(plz check my bio) Appie
DM's is very necessary, to discuss and communicate with friends and people.

It's also a very important way to make buddy reads and discuss books. Without this, GR would be nearly worthless. The communication is what GR should stand for, to make new friends and to get help of people that actually cares about you. GR should absolutely consider to get message back.

Thank you for reading,
Appie

vanessa ⋆.☕︎ [semiᝰia] vanessa - It helps me connect with so many people I’ve met here and talk about books and everything else. I can only DM one person, and if DMs disappear, how am I even supposed to reach them? I’m not downloading another whole app just for that, I need the feature here.

Jasper ~ 小部屋が孤独を甘やかす Jasper Wolf

I have to confront people in private a surprising amount, I’d rather not have to make a whole new group for it!

WHY, no do not take it away, we love it, we need to PM, it makes us feel connected as readers!
