A very welcome gift from my friend Paola, it tells the (partly) fictionalized story of the witch hunt conducted by the puritanical inquisitor Matthew Hopkins in Essex between 1643 and 1645. It is intense, amazingly written, and very, very painful because it is clear from the outset that the fate of the courageous women trying to survive in a closed and bigoted society is already sealed The fact that it is based on the records of the witchcraft trials conducted in Essex by Hopkins makes it all the more sad and disturbing.
But you will love these women (especially Beldam West) and you will be on their side until the end (with a surprise).
