Yvette Prior Hello D.G. Kaye, thank you so much for your review of This is How We Work.
I really appreciate you taking the time to read it and then share a review.
Also, I am so glad you mentioned how the book idea started with inspiration from Bryant's (1972) book.
Here is a little snippet from the opening of our book noting how Clifton Bryant’s Social Dimensions of Work (1972) inspired me to build on his idea by }taking a modern-day approach, gathering content that reveals how the work we do remains deeply embedded in social relationships and broader social structures.
Taking an informal inductive approach gave me flexibility in how the book unfolded, and what emerged were common themes of responsibility, change, stress, and identity alignment. However, this book is much more than just those patterns; it is a rich, multicultural collection of literature that brings together a range of voices, all connected by the common thread of work."

Kaye, I also really appreciated how you closed your review by saying, “an enjoyable book that shared great insights about life, and making it work, while working” — that playful use of the word work was so fun and perfectly fitting. It also showed how clearly you understood what the book conveys: that a topic which might sound ordinary or even boring at first is actually rich, layered, and deeply human.
One more snippet from the book:
"Together, these chapters explore not just what people do, but how they feel about their work. We examine how we view job roles, advancement, change, pain, and other factors within the social layers of working life. We explore how some jobs stay with us and how stepping up and staying responsible can be deeply rewarding. While fair compensation and security keep people at work, it is meaning and growth that truly motivates them to engage. Effective organizations recognize this needed balance, creating environments that meet."
Okay, thanks again Kaye and now I am going back to finish reading your awesome book about grief, which I realize came out the same week as This is How We work. I will share my review soon.
best wishes,
Yvette
