Good luck with achieving the goals, Iain! We might still be here, if you'll want to greet us in Spanish a year after-:)
Merry Christmas to you all, and my best wishes for a prosperous and virus-free 2021, whether you celebrate or not.
Sooner here than for most. The weather forecast is quite good for here. Everyone have a Happy, virus-free and Prosperous 2021
Nik wrote: "Happy Labor Day & Jewish New Year for those who celebrate either or both!"Cool! Well we celebrate the Labor Day over here in the states as there are lots of people off work and some businesses are closed. Mostly government businesses and all banks are closed. :)
You know I saw this thread with Christmas and thought oh someone is celebrating early.....hahaha!!
We celebrate Labour day, but not yet. It is Mondayized here, and around the 20th of October so for me, celebrating is a little premature right now. But at the risk of going off topic, no reason not to add a little single malt to a glass :-)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!
Nice selection, J.
This one's not very seasonal but here's a great 5 second clip of a song sung at the Ally Palace a couple of days ago:

Beau,Are darts still a big thing in GB?
If so, I think that the Canucks have you beat.

Fair play to the Canadians, J. I thought they were all soya-drinking vegans who never did anything more exciting than spending a few minutes on the trampoline. I was clearly wrong.
Yes, darts is still thriving over here. I fell in love with it in the early 80s – the era of Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Jocky Wilson, Keith Deller and the like. They’d sink 6-10 pints during a match, smoke a few fags, and still produce some amazing darts.
The promoter, Barry Hearn, helped revolutionise the sport, and now the players are a lot cleaner cut and more sportsmanlike, although there are still some great characters. The matches attract big crowds, many of whom turn up in imaginative fancy dress. My personal favourite was someone who went as Diane Abbott, holding up a sign saying '190' (Brits will get the joke). Everyone enjoys a drink and a sing song.
Another legend was the Geordie commentator, Sid Waddell, who unfortunately passed away a few years’ ago. Here’s a short clip to show you what he was all about:

Americans, that is a proper English accent, how it should be spoken. My grandad sounded exactly the same :)

That's odd. We were under the impression that this bird is the measure of a proper English accent.https://youtu.be/eXvfqUe4EFQ
I suppose that we were confused by how y'all claim that English is HER language.
Ha ha, I've always been under the impression that Americans either think we sound like the Queen or Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins :)
I know you guys have got regional accents too but we have a massive amount. Only a select few people, who are only answerable to God, sound like HM the Queen.
My accent is a bit like the chap in the brown leather jacket here:

I've read lots of British novels, and it's always interested me that you guys can tell so much about a person just by their accent. I've wondered why it is that the English have so many different accents and yet live in such a small land area.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year and a great rest of the year! I guess Ian and Graeme will be celebrating before the rest of us. The fireworks in Sydney are always spectacular.

Then when so many British TV shows became available I realized that some accents I couldn't understand, even though it was English. My son told me to turn on the CC. Never occurred to me to do that for an English speaking show. Now I do it all the time, because of the variety.
When growing up in NJ we knew who was from the northwest portion of the state and who was from the city or the southern part of the state. As small as the state is, the accent differed. Of course, NY city has it's own I think depending on which area of the city you are in.
Never looked up how that happens.

Lol. When my dad watches 'Taggart' he always complains that he can't understand the Glaswegian accent.
One of the things I love about GB is the variety of accents. Here's 3 of the most popular.

My nan used to send me a paper called The Black Country Bugle. It came out about once a month and was full of interesting things, mostly historical, about the region. At least one of the articles was written as the dialect sounds, so good fun deciphering it.
When I visit my nan, as I'm about to leave, she always says, 'Moind ow ya croz thee os rud,' or at least that's what it sounds like. It roughly translates as 'stay safe' (mind how you cross the horse road) lol!
I reply, 'Yes, indeed. See you soon.'

Just got around to watch these. Funny stuff! Gotta call Sergey Brin for him to make sure google translate stays on top of things to decipher those :)
Indeed, a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperpous 2023 to all. I hope all those affected by bad weather throughout North America succeed in getting to where they want to be and enjoy Christmas with their friends. At the risk of annoying them, here the day is warm and sunny, with little wind. Ideal for not doing very much, which I intend to do with my family.
Merry Christmas! As it is the Eve, I offer an appropriate ghost story read by Christopher Lee.
