I completed my yearly reading of this book, in the wee hours of the morning, on December 24. One of the things he teaches us is that the highest activity of man—which he does for itself and no other purpose—is the contemplative reception and affirming, or loving acceptance, of the whole of reality…and most importantly of the foundation and cause the whole. To be able to do this highest activity, we must be able to see, glimpse, behold, and we must be able to celebrate. Therefore, without eyes to see, and the ability to celebrate (through festivals and the fine arts), we cannot contemplate God or see the Christ who is behind all things. At this time of Christmas festivities, it is high time that we learn, again or for the first time, to see and to celebrate!
