i'm pretty sure Isekai goes way, way far back, but perhaps this is to say this particular book is the one to codify the modern understanding of it.

Isekai does go way, way back, but the idea of it as a genre didn't become a thing until this series. (from what I have put together) Being transported to another world is a story as old as time, as the saying goes. Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, Labrynth, Narnia, the Gospel of Job (he gets taken to Heaven), so on and so forth.
I remember hearing someone comment that John Carter of Mars is the first Isekai story as we know it today, but I could be wrong about that.
