message 1: by Philip (new)

Philip Fascinating and thanks for the references.

message 2: by Boudewijn (new)

Boudewijn Thanks Marc for all your reviews. A number of times you managed to bring my attention to authors I didn't know but whom always were a pleasant surprise. Your thougthful reviews were my compass in these. All the best for 2026. Enjoy your retirement and I hope uncle Jeff allows us to enjoy this medium for many tears to come.

message 4: by Katia (new)

Katia N Thank you for your wonderful presence here, Marc. I always look forward to your insightful reviews both mainstream and history books even I do not comment that often you are such a treasure and inspiration! Let’s hope 2026 would bring new book discoveries. 180 is super impressive! Best wishes in the New Year!

message 5: by lex (new)

lex Thanks for all your contributions here, Marc! It's a real pleasure to read them and one of the reasons to stay on GR for as long as we have here.

Anisha Inkspill I' ve enjoyed reading your posts and find them enlightening, and like how for some books you have two versions. And wanted to wish you Happy Reading for 2026

message 7: by Ken (new)

Ken Me, I'm an Odyssey guy vs. an Iliad guy. Odysseus' character intrigues me because, as you said, tough to can and shelf him. I read my first Lispector last year (or was it 2024?). Hmn. Sometimes books escape my yearly lists like that, but I'll have to check out her Imitation and, while I'm at it, go more than one deep on my Bernard reading resume, too. Enjoy 2026, as I will your tough (star-wise) but insightful (thought-wise) reviews!

message 8: by Steve (new)

Steve I have not previously heard of the possible demise of GR. Could you please fill me in on what you have read about the matter? After returning (partially) from a lengthy absence due largely to health issues, I would hate to see this platform disappear like BookLikes did.

TheBookWarren Well said Marc!!!

A few weeks ago GR warned everyone with an account that the message-function would disappear, without further elaboration (and not giving a date, but it's probably 1/1/26). Comments would still be possible. It's just one step further in the demise of this site.

And to you too, Marco. Always a pleasure to read your thoughts!

message 20: by Fionnuala (new)

Fionnuala Thank you for your always interesting reviews, Marc, and congratulations on gaining more reading time.
I'm remaining optimistic about the future of goodreads. I think Jeff knows very well that his company benefits a lot from the way we encourage each other to seek out more and more books. As for the messages, it may not be popular to say it but this is not a messaging site, after all. It's primarily a book reviewing site and the communication I value most here is the comment threads of reviews. While we have that, I'm happy.

message 21: by Shaun (new)

Shaun I hope the platform gains features and does not only remove them because some of the UX can be better PLUS I think some of the latest updates are also meant to be security enhancements which is good!

message 22: by Ilse (new)

Ilse Congratulations with such a superb reading year and a very happy 2026 to you and yours, Marc! Having started Alkibiades yesterday, following your journey into Greek history here will certainly enhance the reading experience. Here’s to more happy reading in 2026!

message 23: by Judyta (new)

Judyta Szacillo Congratulations on your retirement! I feel so jealous now... My reading year was extremely poor due to a new and very absorbing job. Hopefully it'll get a bit easier with time. Happy New Year, with plenty of good reads!

message 24: by Cecily (new)

Cecily The cable on the plug is definitely fraying, but there is no other site that has all the best features of GR, let alone all the people. Good to have you here, Marc, and I hope you continue to enjoy retirement.

message 25: by Yules (new)

Yules Congratulations on your retirement and an excellent reading year, Marc. Happy 2026!

message 26: by David (new)

David Always wonderful to see what you have read Marc. Congrats on retirement and all the best in 2026!

message 27: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thank you for taking time to provide such thoughtful reviews. Congrats on your retirement! So pleased to have found you/your reviews with my search on the Ghosh book last month. Only bad part: my TBR list will just keep growing (already added a couple after reading this entry :-)
I (also) loved Angle of Repose after learning of Stegner 10-ish years ago. Check out The Spectator Bird if you've not already read it. Another good one!
