Kate This folder used to be called 50 Books in a Year but as it hasn't been used for a number of years I've re-named it: The Goodreads Reading Challenge.

If you've set yourself a goal for 2025 whether that is to read 50 books, 100 books, 25 books or whatever number suits you, feel free to post in this thread and let us all know how you are getting on.

Carole Mills My goal is 15 books. It’s a personal challenge this year as i normally settle for 12. So im upping my game. Almost finish my first read of the year!

message 3: by Liz (new)

Liz Good luck Carole, I gradually upped my annual number over the years and I'll be reading 40 books again this year. I set it at 40, to encourage myself to tackle some longer books (my doorstops) - ones that are bound to take longer than a week!

I've made a good start - onto my third already (although they have all been quite short so far...)

Kate, you cannily avoided sharing how many books you're aiming for this year ;)

Ha ha! I tried 50 last year and had to down grade to 40 at the last minute because I wasn't going to make it! 😂 I did manage 43 though so I've compromised this year and set it as 45.

message 5: by Gareth (new)

Gareth Is Haunted I'm aiming for 36 books read, 3 per month. I figure that's a manageable target and less than I read last year.

message 6: by Lucy (new)

Lucy I'm aiming for 30 this year, I did 25 last year. I'm on my 6th already, so off to a good start, but that could all go horribly wrong! if I carry on in this way I may up it to 40. We shall see!

3 per month sounds very doable Gareth. Good luck!

Sounds like you've made a strong start Lucy. Fingers crossed you maintain that pace.

message 9: by Mary (new)

Mary I set my goal at 50 books this year . I have set smaller goals ( last year ) and more ambitious ones ; ( the year before )
I’m already just about through 5 so think it’s going well . The trouble( not trouble , just fact) is , that when I am enjoying a book I’ll read much more slowly . Love to savour when it’s good ! 😊

message 10: by Linda Ferguson (new)

Linda Ferguson I like to read two books a week, which consists or various page count and genres!

Liz Mary wrote: "The trouble( not trouble , just fact) is , that when I am enjoying a book I’ll read much more slowly . Love to savour when it’s good ! ..."

I have the opposite problem, when I'm really enjoying the book, I tend to race through and then I get sad when it's all over.

I sometimes do that if I'm reading a non-fiction book, I may also have a novel on the side.

message 13: by Paul (new)

Paul Besley I've set my reading goal at 52 this year and will probably have to up it or read more difficult books. I'm also doing themed months, Jan-female Feb-male Mar-french etc along with the other challenges and my classical reading course. It's getting a bit busy.

message 14: by Paul (new)

Paul Besley Well I hit my reading goal by May so I've extended it to 65 now for the year. Thought that will no doubt be extended again.

Well done! I'm currently on target, although big chunky books have slowed me down!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel I change my total from 70 to 80 around half way through the challenge and today I finished my 101st book! So smashed it!

Looking back over the years I actually read less than I did when I worked! Thought retirement would keep the level up but obviously I do more ‘other’ things now I’m retired!

message 17: by Liz (new)

Liz Wow! Well done, Lynne. I usually read about 50 books a year, but I set my goal to 40 so that I can include some big chunky/time-consuming books without worrying that I won't make it. This year, I've read 54 books, but it'll probably be 55 by the end of the month. :)

message 18: by Lucy (new)

Lucy I set my goal at 30. I've read 26 and might have 27 by the end if I'm lucky.
other things have taken over this year. It's been a difficult year, to say the least. Will be glad when this one is over!
I might do 30 as a target again next clear and see how I get on. I started the year well, then it all went a bit out the window when family things went downhill.
Although, I am pretty sure ive read more this year than the previous one and thats probably down to having a Kindle now. dammit! and I was so against a Kindle!

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate Well done Lucy, you have managed to get close to your target. Sounds like you've had other priorities though and that's ok!
A new goal and fresh start to the new year is probably just what you need. Hope 2026 is better for you.

message 20: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Thanks Kate.
Hoping to do some travelling around the UK next year so fingers crossed. if all goes to plan!

message 21: by Paul (new)

Paul Besley I finished the year at 126 reads. Only two duds, lots of new finds, and some classics. This year I also began reading one of the books I enjoyed reading a few years back. I try to read at least one per month. Jan 26 I will be reading from Jan 23. I think it might be The Summer Book by Tove Jannson as I got The Winter Book for xmas, so will read them together.

message 22: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I didn't set a challenge this year but have read 34 books this year. Finding time for physical reading can be challenging for me so I supplement with audiobooks. If they count then my total is 49. Am so pleased I found this group as the threads are giving me lots of inspiration for 2026 :)

message 23: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok I set my challenge at 50 for the year because I was working really long hours. But in May my schedule lightened up, so I managed 89.5 (the .5 is because I’m halfway through a reread of Daniel Deronda).

message 24: by Kate (new)

Kate My goal was 45 books and in the end I managed 51 so I'm really chuffed.
For 2026 I've decided to be ambitious and try for 50 again.

What is everyone setting their goals at for 2026?

message 25: by Liz (new)

Liz I'm sticking with 40 - it keeps me moving, but doesn't stress me out - reading's fun after all!

message 26: by Liz (new)

Liz Catherine, audiobooks definitely count :)
