I like that the visual media is a completely different experience. There's nothing that disappoints me more when films stay "faithful" to the book.
Peter Jackson explained that he tried to stay very faithful to the books, and I think he did as good a job as anyone could do in that respect since you can't make a 50 hour movie (or more.) I loved the movies, but the books are a masterpiece.
