There were a LOT of similar plots back in the 80s too! I just don't talk about them because they aren't interesting. On the same token, I think there's a lot of more recent authors doing exciting things. I'd highly recommend Cecilia Grant, Meredith Duran, Rona Sharon, and Minerva Spenser. Their books have pretty unique plots!

I love a campy hero too! These old skool historicals can be so unselfconsciously silly, even when they're dark, and I love that!
