I'd only like to add the observation that no one seems to notice what seems to me an obvious explanation for all the Jefferson-bashing we've seen in recent years in books and plays and "reporting" of all sorts: Jefferson wrote the first Bill for Religious Freedom and championed it into Bill of Rights. It was one of only three accomplishments he wanted noted on his tombstone - along with authoring the Dec of Independence and founding the first secular university in America. That wouldn't have anything to do with right-wing Christian groups trying to erase him from our schoolbooks since 2010, now would it? (Google Bill Moyers article, "Messing with Texas Schoolbooks".
