The lion wants sex, but the result is to continue the genetic line, and his desire for sex is the result of evolution and the survival of the (evolutionarily) fittest (see the Selfish Gene).
Came here to say what Suzanne already said: in most other animals (other than primates), the compulsion to mate is for continuation of the genetic line
