Canadian Jen Great review, Rosh....hopefully more youngsters will take an interest in some of these stories that may drive them to the classical ones!

message 2: by Maureen (new)

Maureen A retelling of Jane Eyre? Now that sounds interesting. Fantastic review Rosh ❤️‍🩹

message 3: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Hanes You sold me on this one! Like you, I’m not a big fan of YA either- but this book sounds like one I would enjoy. First, I live in Michigan 😀, and secondly I’ve never read Jane Eyre (gasp- I know 😮). So, I think I could really learn from this retelling and maybe want to go back and read the original classic. Fantastic review, Rosh! 💗

Jayme C (Brunetteslikebookstoo) Terrific review! 💞

message 5: by Teresa (new)

Teresa A brilliant review!! I'm not a YA fiction reader either but you've really piqued my interest in this one!!

message 6: by Yun (new)

Yun Great review, Rosh! Glad this is a retelling worth checking out. I will go do so! ;)

message 7: by Tina (new)

Tina Sounds like a good re-telling! Great review Roshie!!! 👏

message 8: by Baba (new)

Baba You do get some good complimentary copies Rosh; thank you for sharing this extremely interesting to me, retelling, as a huge Jane Eyre fan.

message 9: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Retellings of classics are very satisfying (when done well). I am very happy there was a 4 star YA novel out there for you, Rosh! ;) Excellent review!

message 10: by Srivalli (new)

Srivalli (Semi-Hiatus) I did wonder why you grabbed this one. 4 stars is high praise for YA, so I'm adding this to my TBR. Fab review, Rosh. :D

So... the ending... (view spoiler)

message 11: by Kaceey (new)

Kaceey Excellent review Rosh! I’m glad you enjoyed even if it was YA. I’m not normally a fan of YA either.💗

message 12: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - still catching up! Well it's no small feat to take on a book like Jane Eyre and actually do it justice! I laughed at loud about your Austen retelling comment, I know those are a no go for you and I get it!! 👏 The fact that it would stand on its own (even if you weren't familiar with the source material) is high praise indeed! Fantastic review, Rosh! 💞

message 13: by Thibault (new)

Thibault Busschots If you’re so positive about a YA read, then the author definitely did something right, apart from it being a retelling of a classic book that happens to be a favorite of yours. Glad this one doesn’t try to be an obvious copy paste retelling of the original, but rather tries to stand on its own while keeping the original source of inspiration close to its heart. Great review, Rosh.

message 14: by Chris Lee (new)

Chris Lee I have never read the original classic. 😅 I really like the fact that you compared it to the original and gave it props as a standalone. You OMG line made me chuckle. Glad it still worked despite you not enjoying YA that much. A win for Rosh. :D Fantastic review, my friend.

message 15: by Esta (new)

Esta Sounds like quite a gem dear Rosh! Fantastic review keeping all perspectives in mind, love to see it! 💜🖤

Thanks, Jen! I hope so too. Especially if the retelling is modernised and set in a high school, it should have more appeal than classic tomes.

Thanks, Maureen! 💖 Right? I don't think I've ever heard of a YA retelling of this classic prior to this one.

Thanks, Rachel! 💖 Haha, luckily for you, I'm not a believer in 'a true reader should read all classics.' 😉 I've not read so many Russian classics, and I've no intentions of doing so. You might like this, but do remember it is a YA novel to the core.

Rosh Teresa wrote: "A brilliant review!! I'm not a YA fiction reader either but you've really piqued my interest in this one!!"

Thanks much, Teresa! I'd still recommend this only to those who enjoy YA fiction. I can't take the responsibility if anything goes wrong when adults read YA books as I myself am so apprehensive of them! 😆

Thanks so much, Yun! I hope you enjoy this too if you do get to it. ☺️

I scan all available ARCs with an eagle eye, Baba! 😆 I read so much that I can't afford to keep buying new books, and indie ones are very expensive here in India. (I totally understand why!) This is a great method of discovering and supporting new authors without breaking my pocket. 😁
Thanks so much for your kind words!

Very true, Alexandra! I too am happy that such a book (and such authors) exist! Thanks so much! ☺️

Haha, not for the cover this time, that's for sure, though the cover is cute. I couldn't resist the Jane Eyre connection. I went in mentally prepared for a YA romance, so that also helped. 😉
As regards the ending, (view spoiler)

Thanks so much, Kaceey! 💖 YA books need to worry that much harder to please me. 🤭😁

Thanks so much, Catherine! 💖 I still can't believe the author carried this off so convincingly. Jane Eyre is such a tough story to adapt to YA readers without them rolling their eyes at Rochester. Well, that might happen in this book too, but at least he's of their age this time. 😆

Definitely, Thibault. I declare myself pleasantly surprised at how well this went. I did prepare myself for a YA romance, so the expectations were right. 😉
Jane Eyre was never a firm favourite of mine. But yes, I like it much better than the other Brontë work, Wuthering Heights.

Haha, not to worry, Chris! I don't consider the classics a must-read. I tried hard to suppress my true feelings for YA books, but this is the best I could do! 😆 Thanks much!

Being prepared helps!

I read the reveal coz I'll forget it by the time I read the book.
That's quite mature, though I still like my version better. ;)

Rosh Srivalli wrote: "That's quite mature, though I still like my version better. ;)"

Agree on both counts. :D

Hey, nothing to forgive, Colleen. I don't expect authors to read or comment on my reviews, though I do get thrilled when they do! Thank you for writing such a wonderful book! I still remember how surprised I was at the direction you took the classic in. Best wishes. 🤗

message 35: by Nina (new)

Nina Prabhu Can definitely read it at some point because I did enjoy reading Jane Eyre back then. YA is my last option for reading though I dont completely ignore or dislike it. Great review

I too enjoyed Jane Eyre 'back then' but when I read it in adulthood, I was a bit taken aback at the red flags in Rochester.
I still don't like YA 😁 but I am glad such YA books exist to make me eat my words every now and then!
