C. Hi, My name is Chris. I am the creator of this group. I live in north central Ohio. Mother of 2 adult women, one adult son, two granddaughters[27-15],one 25 yr. old grandson, and 1 8 yr.old great granddaughter and one 5 yr.old great grandson, who are a blast to have around! :D

I've been widowed for 19 years come 9/24.

I enjoy most genres of books to read and classic movies, tv, and 50-60s music.

Funny, throughout elementary school, I was so animal crazy that about all I read was animal books, now I read most anything, as long as it's clean. Have recently become hooked on mystery-thrillers, suspense and cozy mysteries.

Fictionophile Hi. Thanks for inviting me to the group!
I am a retired library cataloger. (retired last Christmas)
I am married to a retired firefighter and have two adult children with no grandchildren yet.
Since retirement I've been reading more and reviewing on my book blog: https://fictionophile.wordpress.com/
My favorite genres of fiction are: mysteries, thrillers, literary fiction, historical fiction and women's fiction. I never read science fiction or fantasy, but have been know to read the odd horror title.

C. Hi and WECOME, Thanks for joining.

message 4: by Jessaka (new)

Jessaka Hi, I am glad that you created this group. I saw that you had advertised it on an Amazon thread.

I am not always squeamish, as you would see from my reading list. Basically I like teenage mysteries for times when I like to relax.

C. Hi Jessica, WELCOME, to the group, glad to have you.

Jessaka Hi, I just wrote to you in messages and didn't realize at the time that you are the one who created this group. what a great idea. thanks. thanks for the welcome too.

You are quite welcome. :D

C. Hi Pamela. So glad to have you, and I hope that you will find some good titles here to enjoy. Please be sure to share with us, those that you have enjoyed, as well.

message 10: by Jessaka (new)

Jessaka Hi Pamela, Great to have you here. I am new too.
I would add graphic sex to your list. So far I stick with the Nancy Drew type of books. Also I have read and liked two of Anna Katharine Green's books. You can only get her on kindle unless you can find them used.

C. Re: Fictionphile, I think you would really enjoy the Mystery/Thriller/Suspense that I just finished~ Forget Me by K.A. Harrington

message 13: by Kate (new)

Kate Hello! I'm glad to find this group. I'm not particularly squeamish but at times I just don't feel like slogging through extreme violence to get my logic mystery fix. I'm a big fan of Elizabeth Peters, Dorothy Gilman, Dorothy Sayers, and Charlotte Macleod (although I haven't reread her in quite some time, I might find her politics bleeding through a bit as a grown-up) as more gentle mysteries.

message 14: by C. (new)

C. Hi Kate, Welcome to the group. Thanks for joining us and for mentioning some authors.

message 15: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear Hello everyone! I'm a newcomer to the genre, never liked mysteries as a kid, (though I do remember reading Encyclopedia Brown) but got hooked on some gore-free mysteries and cozy mysteries. I especially like historical mysteries with young lady detectives and a bit of romance.

I have a fancy piece of paper that says I'm a librarian/archivist and I'm also a historian. That translates to under employed these days so I'm working as a history museum guide. It wasn't my first choice but I'm enjoying it- most days (ask me again when 4th graders descend upon us soon)- and learning a lot.

message 16: by C. (new)

C. I didn't read mysteries as a kid, either, but enjoy them now!

I love Natural History Museums, what a great job to have.

message 17: by ctdak (new)

ctdak I read all of the Hardy Boy series as a kid - collected them. That's where it all started for me.

message 18: by C. (last edited Sep 14, 2016 03:18AM) (new)

C. I didn't read the Nancy Drew books until I was in my 40's, but then I enjoyed them. Never read a Hardy Boys, but have seen several say they are more 'adventurous' than ND, so I think I should try some, and see what I've missed.

message 19: by Jessaka (new)

Jessaka I only read the Dana Sisters when I was young. Don't know why I didn't like Nancy Drew then. Like Clive, when I was in my 40s, I started reading Nancy Drew and then collecting them. I am in my 70s now and just getting into The Hardy Boys and the Penny Parker mysteries. And a new author who I really like who writes about two teenage brothers and a girl solving mysteries: Steven K. Smith.

message 20: by Hal (new)

Hal Harrison Hey there! Glad to find this group. Not sure I'm going to fit in, but I like the concept: suspense/thrillers and mysteries without all the gore, profanity and grit. That's what I like to read (and write). In the world we live in today, it's not an escape for me to read a book about sexual crimes, serial killers and terrorists.

I'm glad you started this discussion, however I fear — and the meager membership of this group may attest — that we are in the minority. I'm hoping that's not the case, after all this is a new group!

I really like John Grisham books just for the above-stated reasons. Would love to find more just like him. David Baldacci has some good books, but a couple of duds, too. Read some Harlan Coben, but was disappointed in the ending to Six Years, though the first half of the story was compelling. I'm going to try more of his work, including his latest, "Home."

Looking forward to hearing everyone's suggestions!

C. Hi Hal, Welcome, I'm so glad you found us.

I haven't yet tried any of the three authors that you mentioned, but I am getting ready to try three by a new author for me, Carla Neggers. Saint's Gate (Sharpe & Donovan, #1) by Carla Neggers

Heron's Cove (Sharpe & Donovan, #2) by Carla Neggers

Declan's Cross (Sharpe & Donovan, #3) by Carla Neggers

Hoping they will be without vulgar language, graphic sex ,and grisly gore.

message 22: by Margie (new)

Margie Hi,
Four of my favorite authors are Lee Child, John Sandford, Michael Palmer, and Leon Uris. Of the first three I can't say I remember excessive profanity or anything I didn't like. Leon Uris, I started reading in the 60s. Sometimes a little hard to get into the story but once there, it really grabs you. I enjoy this group and their suggestions.

message 23: by C. (new)

C. Hi Margie, I am not familiar with those authors, so thanks for suggesting them!

message 24: by Margie (new)

Margie I've been viewing the comments for a few weeks now and have chosen some of the authors to try. I'm a bit over retirement age and reading is one of my favorite things to do, though I'm also into Genealogy. Two of my favorite books are The Promise by Danielle Steel, one of her earlier books, and Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The latter book is a Pulitzer winner concerning the Civil War.

message 25: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Hi! I'm a mystery addict and will not read anything dirty. Usually that means I'm reading vintage and Christian mysteries, so I'm eager to see what ends up on the bookshelf here as a "safe" read.

I will try to be active, though many times I am a moody reader and don't read mysteries for a couple months. :)

message 26: by C. (new)

C. Hi Hannah, and WELCOME to the group. I hope you find some great new reads here.

I often switch around the genres I read for several books at a time, since I enjoy so many different ones :D

message 27: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Thanks! I'll post any new favorites I find, also!

message 28: by C. (new)

C. That would be great, and don't forget to post previously read favorites, as well! :D

message 29: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I have been a member of goodreads for about 4 years. Currently usually read amish and christian fiction; but, do like to include mystery. I have started with the guidepost series, bought on ebay, that is usually investigating rather then murder mystery. Easy reading and non-gruesome. I have delve further into amish mystery with Linda Castillo and marta perry, also enjoyable. So, I'm joining to see other suggestions for suspense and mystery. I'm mainly retired; still fill in at schools as a sub; so summer camping and reading are my favorite pastime. my daily breaks usually include a book, even short periods of reading during lengthy commercials

message 30: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I love the title 'moody reader' I think I fit into that also, needing variety

C. Hi Carolyn, I loved The Secrets of Crittenden County Amish Mystery trilogy by Shelley Shepard Gray, and I also love Marta Perry, but I have been leery of those by Linda Castillo(or is it Kate Burkholder) , as the synopsis' for her books sound far too gruesome for my taste!

Sandy Duke I am so glad to find this group! I live in central California where I was transplanted after having grown up in SW Arkansas. I am a pastor's wife, a former homeschooling mom of 4 grown children, and a musician. I am currently substitute teaching, and plan and lead music at church. I enjoy reading several genres, but especially mysteries. Cozy mysteries are fun, but I like to read works a bit more complicated. Lately, I've had a difficult time finding mysteries without graphic gore, excessive vulgar language, or explicit sex or nudity described in way too much detail. I hope to find some great reads through this group!

Patricia Kerr Hi everyone — I’m Patricia an author from Northern Ontario.
I write the Mystery Destiny Series, which blends cozy‑style suspense with real‑life challenges, older protagonists, and a focus on tension rather than gore. My husband's background is in forensics, and he's currently in and out of ICU. I've had enough true life and prefer stories where the danger is distanced and clues are subtle, and the reader never has to wade through graphic content to enjoy the mystery.

These days I’m writing from a quiet patch of mixed hardwood forest, drawing inspiration from bush roads, small‑town quirks, and the kind of everyday details that make a mystery feel grounded without being grim.

Looking forward to connecting with others who enjoy clean, character‑driven suspense.
