I liked this book, but I know what you mean about people comparing themselves to Holden Caulfield. That annoys me too.
HA! You make an interesting point about Caulfield being so unlikeable. Although, that's actually one of the things I admired about this book, Salinger took a huge risk making his protagonist so abrasive. That's kind of how I felt about the TV show "House, M.D.", some of my friends said they couldn't watch it because House was such a jerk, but I actually enjoyed that he was so different from the usual "hero".
