Angela M Growing up in a city in upstate NY, I was one of the readers bored by the tobacco farming detail, but otherwise loved it.

Diane Barnes I wasn't really sure why he included it Angela, other than the fact it's a dying art by small farmers and he wanted to share the details of what hard work it involved.

Diane Barnes That is so true Candi.

Jim Puskas Regrettably, we are probably coming close to the end of Wendell Berry's days. I hope to work my way through the entire list before I too pass on ...
By sheer coincidence, even though I've lived most of my life in Canada, I had occasion to travel those backroads of NC a number of times and got to know some of the kind of people Berry (and Wayne Caldwell) write about. It's soul-mending stuff.

Diane Barnes I live in Charleston SC now, but NC will always be home. I'm glad you mentioned Caldwell, he needs to be better known.
