Ugh. Goodreads just lost a long comment I wrote about agreeing with you, Ray on everything you stated above. Suffice it to say (since I’m not typing all that again) that as I sit here waiting for the joyful news of the demise of he-who-shall-not-be-named, I’m adding the book you recommended to my TBR list.
Thanks, Merry. I think you'll enjoy "Station Eleven". Emily St. John Mandel can really, really write!
Ray, sounds like this book needs to be moved to some “never try reading it again” list. Your comment reminds me of when I read The Goldfinch. It was all over the bestseller and must-reads lists. I thought it was horrible and terribly written. Just can’t always trust those hoity toity recommendations!!
This was one of the worst books I’ve ever read. The Goldfinch was one of the best. Ray, try A boy and His Dog at the End of the World. You might enjoy it.

Thanks, CJ, I definitely enjoyed that one. Looks like you and I have somewhat similar tastes!
Thanks for the head's up -- I've also seen this reviewed (you might want to add The Guardian, bless, them, to your list), and thought I should give it a try. But what you say about unsatisfactory writing --telling not showing, plugged an agenda, rather than telling a story --seems to apply to SO MANY of the books given high praise in the NYT, New Yorker, Guardian, etc. I've been burned a few times, too .... You've saved me some wasted time, and I thank you for that!!!
