Oh dear! I also had high hopes from this one. :/

I'm still coming to terms with the disappointment, Roshy. 🥺

It's an ARC, they always 4/5-star ARCs. Then when the book is out, the rating average plummets.
And it's my curse to often be the lone ogre giving ARCs low ratings. 😄
This is why you should only read books about orcas, sharks, and shipwrecks. You will rarely be disappointed. 😛

They don't do many fairy tale retellings with orcas, sharks, and shipwrecks. 🥺

You people should be talking me out of negative reviews and rants, not encouraging my bad habits! 🤣

Yep. I had high hopes for this one. *sniffle*
I'm so excited to hear what you think of this one! I was tempted to request an arc of it but decided against it. I love reading your arc reviews cause I feel like you're one of a handful of actual honest reviewers.

Thank you, Angela, I'm touched. 🤗 I may be too honest for my own good, I get trolled and blacklisted for being one of the few that doesn't fear to 1-star ARCs. 😄
I'm drafting the review as we speak, so it should be posted later.

You are so welcome! Often I find myself referencing your reviews for new releases cause I know you aren't holding back!
Well, I'm like you, I just don't want to mislead people and I personally think that some authors should need other eyes outside those that are used to their work - I don't dislike the author, but this book was just upsetting when so much work and love went into her trilogy.

Andi wrote: "Well, I'm like you, I just don't want to mislead people and I personally think that some authors should need other eyes outside those that are used to their work"
I don't either, and I do understand what you meant. I've had to be brutally honest with authors I love, too, and fans think I hate them or am not a real fan for that or don't understand their work. It's annoying! As if just because you're a fan you must be blind when they publish a dud.
I love Katherine Arden very much! Winternight is amongst my faves of all time. But she won't be the first or last fave author I experience disappointment with. It hurts more, yeah, much much more, precisely because you love their work.
Yeah. Everyone I feel goes through a 'dud' moment. I have never knew of an author that doesn't.
One day I would love to know if any of the reviews on arcs change narratives or plot points.
Oh no, Arden’s trilogy has been one of my favorites in the last few years!!! I might save reading your review until I can get my hands on the book myself. Not because I wouldn’t believe you… but it’s nice holding onto a little hope I might feel differently.😆
Andi wrote: " One day I would love to know if any of the reviews on arcs change narratives or plot points."
Me too! For first editions, maybe it doesn't happen unless the book is months away and there's enough time and/or the gaffe is bad enough that merits a change? I've not paid attention, but probably there's been cases out there.
Victoria wrote: "but it’s nice holding onto a little hope I might feel differently.😆"
Not unreasonable to hope for, indeed. I do tend to be an outlier... 😆
Hopefully we find out one day - but I am sure authors will take those reveals to the grave.
I've gotten a lot of likes recently on my review, and I see the same is for you and Sarah as well. So I guess there are dozens of us that believe this was not her best. But we probably won't get those reviews until the book comes out.
That's interesting. So the story is partly based on Jehovah's Witnesses teachings, but presents them as mainstream Christianity?

Hi, Lisa! Happy to see you commenting for the first time. :)
You might think differently, so if you're interested in the story don't let my (outlier, as you can see) review stop you.
Sarah wrote: "How do you feel about rewriting this book?? I will definitely read your version! 😉"
Haha, I think Andi has better ideas than I (and can write). 😄
I would never let anyone's review stop me. As for me commenting for the first time? I'm a firm believer in less is more! I'm not one who talks much. Believe me, I'm old and grumpy! No one needs that!
I do enjoy your review's though. Even if I don't comment.😳

Thank you, Lisa! Glad to hear that, I do like to greet first-time commenters, especially when they're friends I've had for a while. :) You'll always be welcome.
What a pity :( I loved her Winternight trilogy so much. When I read the plot summary for this one, I was interested, but not in a I-must-read-this way. Hmmm... (And why would you name your book Devil Faland? That's just annoying :) )
Pity, I liked the winternight trilogy.
Also, I find that many strong/determined etc FMCs kind of blend together to a generic girlboss archetype, some of them end up being likeable but some of them not (to me, anyway). This sounds like the latter case.
Here's to the next one being better for you!
Mai wrote: "Oh no. I’m so sad. 😭"
So am I, Mai. I really hoped for the best, but I can't lie if it wasn't good for me. 😭
Elentarri wrote: "Oh, that's too bad. This sounded interesting. 😖"
To be honest, the blurb wasn't interesting to me. It was Arden's name what drew me in.
Well, this is why I tend to avoid certain books by my favourite authors... 😭
Alexandra wrote: "(And why would you name your book Devil Faland? That's just annoying :) )"
Have you read Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita"? I'm convinced the name of Faland is a copy/homage to Woland, as I mention in the review. Arden has inserted a few homages here and there in this book.

Hehehe, I'd have said Laura is too dull to be a girlboss, but she sure does have the traits of one. It's in the writing, I think it was Andi (or was it Sarah Grace?) who said that Laura is like a collection of personality traits rather than a person, and I agree with that assessment.
What a mess indeed, clearly it wasn’t meant to be. Sounds to me like The Little Engine That Couldn't to me, or maybe The Little Arden That Couldn't would be more appropriate in this case. Excellent rant Marquise! A bit disappointingly polite but still awesome. And boring Laura LOL!
Federico wrote: "Excellent rant Marquise! A bit disappointingly polite but still awesome."
First time you find me too polite! 🤣 Should I be worried? 😝
Arden also says in her notes that this story fought her almost word by word . . . I can totally believe it, I think she forced it in ways it shouldn't be, and this is the result.
