Kristi The description is wrong. This is actually the plot of The Royal Book of Oz.

Mir Ok, thanks. What's Kabumpo about, do you know?

Kristi The description from Amazon (which is correct) says:

During Prince Pompadore of Pumperdink's eighteenth birthday celebration, his birthday cake explodes, revealing a magic scroll, a magic mirror, and a doorknob. The scroll warns the prince that if the he doesn't wed a "proper princess" within seven days, his entire kingdom will disappear. The prince, along with the kingdom's wise elephant Kabumpo, set off on an adventure to the Emerald City so Pompa can marry Princess Ozma, the only "proper princess" the Elegant Elephant can think of as worthy of his prince.

I can also tell you that Ruggedo the Nome King makes an appearance as well. :) I just finished it, and I thought it was much better than The Royal Book of Oz.

Mir I'll look for it, thanks! The elephant sounds familiar, but not the prince...

Kristi In all fairness, the elephant is much more memorable than the prince. But I think that the elephant makes appearances in other Oz novels, so you may be remembering him from elsewhere.

Mir My mother read them to me when I was pretty small. I may have read a number that don't stand out in my memory. Only the few that we owned did I reread myself later.

Hal Astell I believe you have read the book with that description under a different title. It's the previous Oz book, 'The Royal Book of Oz', also by Ruth Plumly Thompson. It isn't 'Kabumpo of Oz'.
