Whatever Gregor Samsa's troubles were with his job paled when he woke up as a giant beetle. As his voice, his motor skills, and his brain function acclimated to this new body, he discovered his family had limits to their love and tolerance for this boy-turned-bug. His father, a precursor to Willy Loman—and his mother--torn between her love for her son and her natural aversion to bugs--struggled. Even Gregor’s sister, loyal and sympathetic at first, gave up on him. Whole religions have been based on humans transforming into other forms. This story presents an immediate transformation, forcing the family to deal with it in real time. Pure Kafka.
