We just watched the TV reboot (or whatever you want to call it), belatedly. Interested to see if this holds up in the sober light of 2026!
It's a nostalgic re-read so far. Hornby drops 'retard' and 'oriental' in the first chapter which I think dates it!
Had a lot of affection for this when I read it on publication, but I'm not sure how well it would hold up now. Probably an essay in toxic masculinity.
That said, I don't remember how much/whether Hornby comments on that behaviour and mentality. ISTR the male protagonist of Juliet, Naked being framed in a more unambiguously negative (or at least unflattering) way, though it's a while since I read that now, too.
