Yun...I hope this read is a winner for you! Enjoy!
If you want something more in the lines of what this book promised to deliver, please look into Peach Blossom Spring!
Interesting review. From the gist of it, 'convoluted' might be the best description..Regardless, writing is art and individual tastes vary and from the sound of it, this doesn't fit with the narrative styles I prefer. Glad you found elements what worked in spite of the 'choppiness'
Ahh, this was my BOTM order, but I’ll still give it a read! For some reason when I was reading the subjects the book tackled, I thought of The Joy Luck Club, which in my opinion, was a good book and a good movie!
Excellent review, Yun. It can be so frustrating when a book shows so much promise in its premise and early chapters, but never entirely delivers on them. Telling three generations’ pov stories while also expounding on culture and the ethics of gene editing seems like a tall ask from any author. Glad you were able to find some enjoyment in the tale, despite it falling short in terms of writing style, focus and overall messaging!

I loved the JLC movie, but never read the book and always mean to. But yes, you should still read this. It's a good story even if it isn't quite as brilliant as I'd hoped. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks, Julie! I think this is a case where the author just tries to tackle too much.
“Every time I came across an interesting observation, I'd get excited, only to have the book immediately abandon it and move onto the next thing.” YES. that’s exactly it! this review is wonderful.
Fantastic review, Yun. I have only read part 1 and 2 (Lily and Nick), but I completely agree with your synopsis. She tries to tackle a lot. It had a lot of potential. Your review is very well written. I look forward to Mei's section, as you state it was the strongest. Thank you for sharing your reading experience.

Thanks, Peter! For sure.

Thanks, Jayme!

Thanks, Nancy!

Thanks, Heidi!
Fascinating review Yun, it's interesting matching expectation to reality, even more so when the potential is there, but just not reached!
“Throughout the whole story, there is this feeling that the good part is coming and I’m imminently about to stumble upon it. And this feeling propelled me through the book.”
This is exactly how I felt. I didn’t like this book, but I apparently didn’t dislike it, either, because I kept reading, thinking something significant was about to happen. Great review!
🤔bummed I hate that when it happens when you know that this could be a potential good read but it falls short.... Amazing review Yun
I've been contemplating adding this one but didn't want to get carried away with the masses. I agree - when an author tries to tackle too much you don't get deep into any one theme. Awesome review, Yun
Nicole wrote: "Great review, Yun! At least, you still managed to enjoy this novel, I suppose!"
Thanks, Nicole! I did enjoy it, so I can't complain too much. :)
