My native language is German. I learned English in school (grades 5-11). At school, I only read English texts that were part of the curriculum. I read classics like Stevenson, Dafoe, Poe, Twain, Melville, and London in German translation.
It wasn't until my early twenties that I read modern American authors like Stephen King and John Irving in the original English, simply because I didn't want to wait for the translation.
Now, about 80% of my reading consists of original English (or American) books and stories.
I read Homer and Virgil a long time ago, and only in German translation. [My youngest son is studying Latin in school.]
I only know a few latin proverbs.
I only had three years of French in school, so I've only read the works of Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne in German translation as well.

I see you've picked out some English language classics to read. Good idea. Some great books there.
