Dolors Thanks for this review, Cheryl! Not many people on the page are familiar with the Spanish Civil War and the weight of its history. Decades of suppression of languages and identity under Franco...and yet here we are, Catalan, Basque, Galician...still resilient cultures. Your reflection captures that same spirit of endurance.

I thought of you, Dolors :)
I learned so much just from this novel and I wish I could have framed more of the thoughts I had. I was also pleased to see how much research Boling did. He stated in the acknowledgements that his daughters have "Basque blood," so I can imagine this was also personal for him. It was intriguing to follow his research, especially to learn that he was able to locate and consult with a scholar of Basque Studies and Language at UNLV, although these days I wouldn't be surprised if that position no longer exists.

Dave Boling Cheryl, thanks so much for you beautiful review!. I only rarely check back in on GoodReads, since it's been so long since Guernica was published. Your insights make me realize it might have new relevance to another generation, as you put it "as a cautionary tale" about life under a Fascist dictatorship!

Dave, I'm honored that you dropped in with a comment. Thanks for this gem of a novel and for adding to the conversation with this kind comment. I've been telling so many friends about this book. It certainly is relevant today and a cautionary tale, indeed.
