I've just this minute finished reading an unusual, unguessable novel that, in the end, turns out to be that same question, posed and finally, on behalf of its protagonist, answered. It's called Leviathan and it's by Paul Auster. I can't see how to post a link to it in this tiny Comment box, but you should be able to find it from that, on Goodreads or anywhere else.
