Oh I like the podcast's idea. K19 will be a great flix for you to defend. Was a great movie at the time. But don't go easy on that terrible Russian accent Liam Neeson sprinkled in!
Ha ha yeah accents took a beating in that movie didn't they? I am glad you liked that movie, not many saw it or liked it. It wasn't "US MIchael Bay" enough, not enough explosions, and who wants to cheer for Russians? But I rank it up there with Da Boot as the most realistic depiction of submarine duty. The other reason I think it didn't get a wide audience is it defied people's "(Hollywood-induced" picture of service to one's country. Not many people serve these days--what is it, 5%? So people have this completely unrealistic image of servicemen (and women).
Look at Hunt for Red October--Capt Manusco defies orders, yet is heralded as a hero! In the real world he would be strung up. Harrison Ford's character follows orders, (ordering men to their deaths) and that role destroyed his career. Americans have fallen in love with a false image, not reality.
I miss the non-CGI movies. It feels (having only toured submarines) that the submarine movies that offer the gritty perspective come off as more authentic. Though I am not one to bash Down Periscope either Lol
It was a very Apollo 13 adjacent story. But I suppose since their mission was one of war their struggle was viewed in a different light (Unless one believes in the creatures living on the dark side of the moon that is then I'd suppose they were both war movies Lol). Also for an US audience maybe they are less inclined to viewing a Cold War enemy as a hero. Either way now I'm going to have to give it a rewatch.
Loved K-19. Very gritty and unique perspective on what could/did happen. Other favorites include Operation Petticoat and it's newer version Down Periscope. Those that have BTDT can see and relate the stereotypical roles played in each, despite the comedy.
