This book contains a fascinating history of how the "Great Replacement Theory" originated, and how central racism was to establishment thinking in the US in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. So important was the innovative thinking about race by Boas, Mead, Benedict and their circle of anthropologists that many of us came to take for granted their tolerant, analytically-informed perspective on race and culture. King reminds us that today's rightward shift in US racial politics is not so much an aberration as a return to bigoted old norms.
