Jo Sparkes I've just released a new book - and realize I'm not even sure of the genre. It's sort of a mystery/suspense, with psychics. A murder mystery that Maeve Binchy might have written.

My challenge is that if I don't get the description right, readers expect James Patterson.

Any advice?

Robert Cauley I had this issue with my trilogy. I write theme over genre and character decisions over tropes. So it is hard to catalogue my work.

My trilogy is existential sci-fi, mystery, polyamorous romance, with literary themes. I settled for categorizing it in Sci-fi Romance, Polyamorous Romance, and Contemporary Romance.

All I did was identify the common threads of current genres, since there is no actual space for my trilogy within the hyper-limited genre categories.

I used my A+ content to help direct the reader's understanding of the book. My blurbs hit the mark of piquing interest, but I use the A+ content as a teaching tool to help the reader understand how the story is meant to be seen.

I'll share a link to my Amazon book page so you can understand what I mean: https://a.co/d/0g5dw8er

I hope that helps.
