Andréa Lechner Having now read all of her novels, I can say without hesitation that The Clock Winder is one of my favourites.

You're an Anne Tyler completist!!! 😭 You're my hero! I love that this one is your favorite. It's definitely not one of her more popular novels. I must check out your GR bookshelf! Your comment made my day. 🤗

Canadian Jen Such an interesting quote! Love that you managed your expectations, K, and this worked for you probably even more. Great review. I do have a few more of Tyler's works that I plan on reading too.

Thank you, Jen. I always love seeing an Anne Tyler book review pop up on my feed, so I know I'll be excited to see which ones you read!

Jennifer nyc It sounds like you got a lot of joy from this novel, K, and reading her novels back to backwards, ;). I still haven’t gotten the Tyler bug, although I loved Spool of Blue Thread. It’s the kind of book that made me feel we could all write something so beautiful and simple about our families b/c she makes it look easy. But we know it’s not. Really enjoyed your review and knowledge of this writer. 🌷

Antoinette I love your goal to read all her novels. I started late on her books, so not sure I’ll ever be able to read them all. Wonderful review, K.

message 7: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Love that Jay Parini quote, it describes her writing exactly. I started her books early in her career and read each one as it's published. At this point, I've forgotten the very early ones, so time to start over maybe.

Karen I love that you’re enjoying your Tyler journey, K!

message 9: by Jodi (new)

Jodi K, I'm so glad you're enjoying Anne Tyler's novels!!! I loved this one! You know, that quote from the NYT's guy is spot on!! His last sentence in your excerpt is especially true of Tyler (... for good and ill...) and it's exactly WHY we all love her books so much! Her stories are all so relateable!! Excellent review, my friend!!👍

Sara Sometimes you have to walk before you run. When Tyler started running she won all the races.

A Spool of Blue Thread is on my GR "Favorites" shelf, Jennifer. 🤗 There are some authors I just fall for and I make it a goal to read their entire bibliographies. My very first author crush was Judy Blume and I read all of her books over and over, even the ones I didn't love (Iggie's House) as much as others, (Deenie.) I think Anne Tyler is my grown-up version of Judy Blume. 😄

Thank you, Antoinette. When I love a book, I immediately want to read everything that author has ever written. I'm literally one chapter in of Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont and now I've added her entire bibliography with the exception of one I already own to my Thriftbooks wishlist. Please send help. 😅

My first Anne Tyler was Saint Maybe shortly after it was published in 1991 and it changed my reading life forever after. What a unique experience for you to have read her earlier novels as they were published. It's interesting to compare reading a book when it was published versus reading it many years later.

Thank you, Karen! I know it will be bittersweet for me when I complete it, so I'm taking my time with it.

Thank you, Jodi! I LOVE that you rated it 5-stars! Even though Tyler's novels share a "sameness" among them, they are quite unique from other novels. She is definitely in a category all by herself. 💗

You are so right, Sara. For me, she's an author I don't mind spending time with during her "walking" years.
