Amanda Wonderful review, Sara! Glad the second reading was equally satisfying. I need to check this author out.

message 2: by Sara (new)

Sara I hope you will, Amanda.

Sandysbookaday (on indefinite hiatus) I know exactly what you mean. I love her books, and coming Home is definitely my favourite. I re-read them all every few years.

message 4: by Paromjit (new)

Paromjit Wonderful review, Sara!!

message 5: by Candi (new)

Candi Beautiful review, Sara. I have never read a Pilcher novel, but I know I will be now. I can see I have been missing out on something wonderful :)

Yes, you would like her Candi. I used to read her books as she released them. I was always excited for a new one. I found that this one had held up marvelously over time.

Thank you so much, Paromjit.

I enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Also loved The Shell Seekers and think I need to revisit that one as well.

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Great review Sara! I've never read anything by Pilcher, but I'm looking forward to it.

message 8: by Sara (new)

Sara Thank you, Jennifer. Hope you love her.

message 9: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Lovely review, Sara!

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara Thanks so much, Cheri.

message 11: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean I agree - a lovely review, Sara :)

message 12: by Candi (new)

Candi Sara, I recently purchased a gorgeous used copy of The Shell Seekers. I had seen you and Lori reading Pilcher and decided to snatch up this copy when I stumbled upon it. Maybe a future buddy read :)

message 13: by Sara (new)

Sara Thank you, Jean

Candi, absolutely. I'll bet Lori would be in!

message 14: by Jan (new)

Jan Rice Evocative review, Sara. It's been a long time since I read a Pilcher!

message 15: by Sara (new)

Sara Thanks, Jan. She is someone I used to love reading. It was sweet to do it again.

Another favourite of Pilchers for me is September

message 17: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy Oh I thought it was your first time! It was wonderful that's for sure.

message 18: by Sara (new)

Sara Sandy -- I liked September as well. There is one The Empty House that I have never read. Have to keep an eye out for that one.

Gita -- not surprised that you liked it. We seem to mesh a lot in our tastes.

message 19: by MomToKippy (last edited Aug 05, 2016 07:22PM) (new)

MomToKippy I enjoyed The Empty House! Atmospheric, simple, a little melancholy. We all need a book twin - Maybe you are mine! (-:

Sounds quite possible! I ordered The Empty House today so it would be in my possession when I find the time to read it.

message 21: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy I think I have all her books and have read most of them.

message 22: by Lori (new)

Lori Fabulous review, Sara! I can't thank you enough for introducing me to such a wonderful author! I just love Rosamunde Pilcher to the moon and back!

message 23: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy She's still kickin at about 94 I believe.

message 24: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette Yes, she is a real keeper. Of all the writers I have read- it must be thousands- I think she is the best on gardens. Not just Cornwall gardens either. Lofts, Goudge, Pilcher, and just a few, few others can get inside a normal family in such a depth. Without having HUGE dysfunction as being at the core, at that. Good review- and I hope you find more. Shell Seekers is still my favorite.

message 25: by Becki (new)

Becki Read The Shell Seekers. Same author, even more bummed when you finish it.

message 26: by Philippa (new)

Philippa Cathryn Bresler Great, thanks for the review Sara. Interestingly enough, I’ve never read a Rosamund Pilcher, though of course I’ve heard of her. I have kind of banked her with Maeve Binchy, also virgin territory. And never even thought of them as authors for me. Coming home seems well worth adding to the list. This is why I love Goodreads.

message 27: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah This was a great review which captures my thoughts and feelings about this novel. Thank-you. This is one of my favorites. “Some books you read. Some books you enjoy. But some books just swallow you up, heart and soul.”

message 28: by Bookworman (new)

Bookworman Great review, Sara! This is my favorite Pilcher book which I have re-read countless times.

message 29: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Exactly how I felt!

message 30: by Sue (new)

Sue K H Such a wonderful heartfelt review Sara. I'm not familiar with this author, but I'm adding this book to my list.

message 31: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I completely agree with these reviews. I love the way Rosamunde Pilcher wrote, just drawing in the reader as if you were there. I listened after getting it on Chirp, and the narration was great. It’s long, but worth it. I read the Shell Seekers years ago and loved it. I’ll be reading more R.P. novels now.

message 32: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I also loved the history aspect of this book. I learned a thing or two, even though she did not delve too deeply into the horrors of the war. And the beautiful images of Cornwall will never leave my mind.

message 33: by Kathleen Perrett (new)

Kathleen Perrett I’ve just finished Coming Home and feel bereft now my journey is over. Wonderful

message 34: by Megan (new)

Megan Gibbs As usual your seal of approval of a book guarantees that I will enjoy it and it’s been an utter delight, once again the ‘Sara’ book recommendations come to the rescue, ( you should have a little sticker printed like Reece’s book club🤣)

message 35: by Terri (new)

Terri I would have been nice to have a book that followers this one
About Judith’s and Lovesday new life .

message 36: by Sara (new)

Sara Wouldn't it!. I would have been beating a path to the bookstore to buy it.

message 37: by Allison (new)

Allison I, too, read this in the mid 1990s and now I must read it again. I forgot how much I loved it.

message 38: by Sara (new)

Sara I would actually read it again if I could find the time. It is by far my favorite Pilcher and something about this story completely resonates with me.

message 39: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Woodard I just finished this book. Your review is absolutely spot on. My second Rosamunde Pilcher novel and most favorite read in a long, long time.

message 40: by Sara (new)

Sara So happy you loved it too, Michelle. There are some books that just resonate and then stay with you, and this is one for me.

message 41: by Julie (last edited Jan 08, 2026 07:15PM) (new)

Julie G Sigh. What a gorgeous review, Sara. I felt so happy reading it. The joy of stories is one that only those of us who truly love reading as much as we do can understand. It's funny; I mentioned to a friend on here, just the other day, that I don't understand why these annoying men come sniffing around here, on this site, trying to "friend" us, without making any effort to read books (or read our reviews). I complained to my friend: Why would they come here on THIS site, hoping we all secretly want to date them or something? He said something like, "Well, they assume that women who read as much as you all do are lonely and bored." I was like, "But it's the exact opposite! They don't even realize that we don't want them or need them around because we are so contented!" It's hilarious to me, that some stinky, no good, conniving man who doesn't even read a single book in a year thinks this is some kind of "lonely gals" hunting ground! Be gone, loser, and let me get back to Cornwall!
xoxo

message 42: by Sara (new)

Sara LOL. I think the desperation would be on their end, don't you? I have to wonder what kind of charge they get out of it. If you ever go to one of their profiles you will see that they have only got friends who are women with pictures of themselves. I have thought about changing out my icon and making it one of my cats. I don't really accept friends unless they are in my groups or I have read and loved their reviews. It is a pretty sick world these days, isn't it???

As for this book, I have never been able to nail down why I love it so much, but I do. I doubt it is one that would affect everyone the way it has me, but that doesn't matter. I love a book that will just make me want to laugh and cry and live in it!

message 43: by Chris (new)

Chris Wonderful review. Glad to see those 5 stars. This is on my TBR list. Most of her novels that I read were just so-so for me except September, which I loved.

message 44: by Sara (new)

Sara For me this is her best, Chris, but I generally love her. There is something very peaceful and personal in her writing style.

message 45: by Julie (last edited Jan 10, 2026 06:53AM) (new)

Julie G Sara,
Your comment made me laugh. My daughter took a picture of me while we were out on the Outer Banks and I was thinking of updating, but now I'm hesitating!
Here's what's weirder than just the idea of photos with humans in them: I often get friend requests from men who either have selected ALL women who are wearing glasses or sunglasses in their profile pics OR pictures where all of the women are brunette OR where all of the women have their hair up, in a chignon or a bun, etc.
I wish someone could EXPLAIN to me HOW someone does this? How do they apply such an algorithm to this site and get this result? Like, where do you type in "find me all women on this site with brown hair and a bun?" I don't get it.
I'd also like to point out that the opposite is true, too: I also get many friend requests from men (mostly white men from Nigeria with made-up names) where they have cast a wide net and the women in the photos are anywhere from 20-80, all colors, all sizes and whatnot. I think of them as the more "robotic" men, if you will! Not looking for love, but some type of financial gain.

message 46: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Julie, I'll just slip in here to add something I read once from a scam caller based in India. They would choose women on FB who were huge Tom Hanks fans, because they were proven to be more friendly and trusting, and usually middle-aged. I guess algorithms can be made of many things.

message 47: by Brenda (new)

Brenda I agree with Megan 👆 about the 'Sara Book Recommendation'. I must say that I rely heavily on your beautifully written reviews. Little stickers printed up... the Sara Seal ... would be fun!

Coming Home is one of my all time favorite books - it's right up there with the Shell Seekers. The characters, the settings, the history, the human interaction are all RICH with substance. I think I'll put it on my list to listen to AGAIN this year.

On another note - why do men send friend requests when the have 0 books read on their profile? ZERO.😆

Ah yes, the "I love you, can you send me money?" approach. Sad to think that actually works! I'd love to see the beach pictures!

We give away too much of ourselves online, I think. I'm pleased to say I do not chase celebrity in any form. Not since I was a teenager and in love with the Beatles.

How sweet you are, Brenda.😊 I hope you do reread this one. It was just as lovely on my last read and I hope to make room for it again someday. I miss having authors like Pilcher putting out books you just knew would be wonderful. Not that there aren't any good writers now, but so much of what is out there is just negative and unappealing to me!
