Felicity I liked it better than Brave New World, I believe. (And probably retained more of it.) But I don’t think I had to read 1984 in school — I think I read it and BNW after undergrad, in a spirit of “oh dear, missed these” — whereas we read Animal Farm in 8th grade Government and Language Arts (year theme: Use and Abuse of Power) and I think despite some striking images and moments in 1984, Animal Farm stuck with me more and has been more useful in political understanding, too.

I read all three early in school, and yes, BNW didn't stick at all, not even after I reread it. Animal Farm stuck with me, though we were taught it was a condemnation of Communism when, more accurately, it was a parody of Stalinism. Stalin wasn't a communist but a dictator just like we have in Washington DC today.
