Enjoyed your review, Ian. I've read that Hardy wrote a few other humorous short stories aside from this one. Will try to track them down.

Thanks Ted. I'll be interested to see what you find out.

Thanks Paul.
Hardy and comedy - I know! It's not at all what the reader expects from him!
Is Hardy Society website, free to all punters Ian? I love short stories, but have only had one nigh-marish experience with this author and would like to try him again and SS would be perfect. Great review mate 🤗🦘

Yes it is Mark. All of Hardy's stories and novels are in the public domain now.
The site is hardysociety.org From the home page click the tab for "Resources" and all the short stories are available from that page.
I find some of them pretty average tbh. "The Three Strangers" is quite a good one.
I loved the review, Ian - what a contrast from your last one (about Chinese Communism). Do I have enough years left to work my way through my husband's Hardy's Complete Works shelf?! The novels of his I have read were all really good but definitely tragic!

Thanks Jeanne! Yes, this was definitely a bit of light relief.
If you were thinking of trying his short stories, my favourites so far have been this one and The Three Strangers. They can both be found in the collection "Wessex Tales."
