Have you read Vonnegut's Mother Night? I haven't revisited it in decades, so it's a tentative recommendation. It's about an American writer who remains behind German lines and produces German propaganda to enable him to inform on the Germans to America. The theme is often boiled down t o "We are what we pretend to be."
