Khari I wrote a paper in uni about how fantasy is denigrated as a genre by all the highbrow academic people. I'm sure that he did a much better job. And YES, you should read more Le Guin, she is amazing.

Khari A lot of fantasy is derivative of Tolkien, but not all of it. There have been new genres birthed like urban fantasy, nothing like Tolkien. Sanderson, McKinley, Lawhead, and Bujold all have their own unique takes.
