Where Does Fantasy Go Next? > Likes and Comments

Yes I like happier books in general. I'm not sold on cozy fantasy yet because it feels to low stakes for me to enjoy but I was never sold on grimdark either. Currently into some litrpg and superhero/ villain plots that are not comics. However the litrpg has been hit or miss for me if the writing is too bland or formulaic like a video game tutorial I will dnf it faster than anything else. If I wanted a book to sound like a video game I would just play a pc game instead as that would be more engaging. I like alot of genres so i have no problem with crossover. It more do I care about the characters and problems they are facing. i also like a good amount of humor it can be corny or not as long as the other characters aren't like the MC is so funny when they aren't. That's the book equivalent of a laugh track.
i got bored one day and thought if there is a woman's fiction gerre their must be a men's fiction genre and i found the litrpg and some interesting series like is like a sf mystery about a park ranger solving a new contagious disease outbreak that i liked. Also T.C Edge has both high fantasy and sci-fi series I have been meaning to try. if you want a stand alone book that has the hero's journey try
it was a really good who done it murder mystery with palidains with magical abilities based on there chosen monastic order that are ordered but their superiors to explore a recently unearthed temple complex. they are trapped there are demons and it basically asks who behaves like a holy man verses who actually is wen SHTF. Worldbuilding was good and it made me pause several times to think about morality without being preachy. don't know if that's what you wanted but it might be a good place to start :). i have some other sf series that i would like to recommend but i haven't read them yet myself.

Thanks for the recommendation for Of Deeds Most Valiant. I added it to my TBR.

Humor for me is tough. It truly must be funny for me to like it. Kings of the Wyld misses the mark. The jokes aren't funny.

that's too bad, i will keep that in mind when i try it. i'm glad you liked one of the books.

For me, it's the unending pages about war and all the gritty details that I am completely bored with. Yes, there needs to be conflict, but I like it to be smaller and more personal. A protagonist who is trying to make their tiny corner of the world a better place, while being a decent human being. Like Harry Dresden or Kate Daniels. There are battles, of couse, but they don't consume the whole book or story arc.

A protagonist w..." Agreed. And often, I skip or skim battle. Story stops during the action of a battle. I just want to know that outcome.
