Sea Battle - New Thread

Goodreads is still showing new comments in the old thread when there aren't any, but sometimes doesn't show me notifications when there *are* new posts, so the time has come to start a new thread. If you're working on the challenge in the older thread, you do NOT have to give it up! Just post your next guess here, and we'll continue from there. If you haven't started this challenge yet and would like to, jump right in!

This is the same Sea Battle game that Sam came up with, but since Sam has been off-GR for a while now, we're starting a new thread for anyone who wants to start a new game. You don't have to have finished your old game in Sam's thread to sign up for a new one here.

The Game

Sea Battle was one of the original names for Battleship, a paper game played on a 10 x 10 square grid, where the players try to find and sink their opponent's ships. It is thought to have been initially created during World War I. In 1967, Milton Bradley introduced a version of the game using plastic boards and pegs instead of pen and paper.

In our version of the game, each player will have an individualized 10 x 10 square grid, where the moderator's ships are hidden. Across the left side of the grid will be the numbers 0-9 (one number for each row). This will be the same for every player. Across the top will be 10 letters, chosen by the player (one unique letter for each column). The moderator has 5 ships that the player must find and sink. These include the carrier (which takes up 5 spaces), the battleship (which takes up 4 spaces), the destroyer (which takes up 3 spaces), the submarine (which takes up 3 spaces) and the patrol boat (which takes up 2 spaces). The ships can only be arranged vertically or horizontally, not diagonally.

How to play : The player will make a guess of where they think the ship is hidden. Each guess will be one square. The player will read a book that has a title (excluding A, An and The) or author's initial that starts with the letter at the top of the column and contains the row number in the page count (the edition posted by the player will be the edition used to determine page count; must still be at least 150 pages per group rules). Each guess will be posted as a new message and only one guess at a time. The moderator will then reply to each guess and tell the player whether it is a "HIT" (meaning that square includes a part of a ship) or a "MISS" (meaning that square does not include part of a ship). The next guess cannot be made until the moderator has replied to the player's last guess and the new book read must be completed after that reply was given. Once all the spaces of a ship have been "HIT", the moderator will declare a ship sunk, but will NOT name the ship. Once all 5 ships have been sunk, the game is over. The player can then decide whether they wish to play another game with a new grid board.

Example: If C9 is your guess, you would read a book with a title or author's name that starts with C and which has a 9 in the page count of the edition you read/posted.

♦ Unless otherwise noted, books must be at least 150 pages long. (See the link above for rules regarding graphic novels.) Books may only be used for once in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged :) Re-reads are allowed, as long as you read the entire book. You must read at least half of the book AFTER the challenge begins in order to count it for this challenge.

♦ You may use the first letter of the first word in the book’s title (excluding A, An and The) or the author’s first or last initial (middle names or initials can NOT be used).
-In the case of a hyphenated first or last name (i.e. Sarah-Kate Lynch, Kate Dyer-Seeley), the first letter of the hyphenated name may be used (not the second initial directly following the hyphen).
-If an author uses what appears to be "two last names" (usually a female author using her maiden name and then her married last name; i.e. Kathy Hogan Trocheck), the last initial of the two names counts since the maiden name is now serving in the place of a "middle" name.
