Mark, you should check out the UK, its lovely, although a guy I chatted to in San Francisco did complain that our roads were too narrow but then some would say our country lanes are part of the charm.
Oh I plan on it! Just kidding around in the review. I have a whole list of things to do and a friend who has been there dozens of times as traveling companion. Maybe even this fall! We put off our trip last year.
He mainly loves London and other big urban settings, but I'm going to force him out of his comfort zone lol.
This makes me think about an American I've met at Miami beach. He pointed at the beach and said' You don't have anything that comes even close in Europe' So I asked something like : ' Did you ever visit Spain or Italy ? And he answered in all seriousness : I've been to Heathrow, and it rained ' Okkkk....
You were right about Jeffrey Barlough so this author has gone on the TBR list.
(The UK is a lovely place to visit, but the bleak side of it is less MR James and more JG Ballard. High tension power lines, council estates and Tesco’s sort of vibe.)

LOL you are probably mocking me (I was kidding! I promise!) but this anecdote still made me smile.

I'm so glad to read this! Barlough is terribly under-read.
I liked Cardiff. And I hear nice things about Yorkshire and Glasgow.
I probably won't go back as living there is how I ended up with seasonal affective disorder.
Did not know you had lived there - when was this?
And sorry to read about the seasonal affective disorder! I have a close friend who has to deal with this. It took years for it to really sink in with me about how bad it got for her - she was always putting a good face on it, even though she was going into the depths of depression during the winter months.
