L Y N N A book that makes you feel FOMO

I never remember what FOMO stands for... 🙄😁 Fear of Missing Out!! (Thanks, Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_of...) Perhaps this is due to the fact that I typically do not care if I am "missing out"! A good example? I've not had TV for over 25 years. No fear from me! LOL 😊

I'm kinda flummoxed on this one...though a quick search uncovered this obvious title:
Fear of Missing Out: Practical Decision-Making in a World of Overwhelming Choice by Patrick J. McGinnis

A list that might help:
FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out

Listopia: A book that makes you feel FOMO

Acidic Quagga The Mercury Retrograde Book Secrets for Surviving and Thriving in Astrology’s Most Misunderstood Cycle by Yasmin Boland Jasmin Boland
Maybe The Mercury Retrograde Book: Secrets for Surviving and Thriving in Astrology’s Most Misunderstood Cycle by Jasmin Boland? Though it might be more likely to help with assuaging FOMO, if you believe in astrology.

Conspirituality How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat by Derek Beres Derek Beres
There's also Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat by Derek Beres? I feel it has the same issue as the first, helping to get over FOMO instead. Although if you're already attached to a belief and then leave it behind, I can see how that could cause some FOMO.

I have a bunch of books that are geared towards avoiding or getting over FOMO, but I know that's not technically the prompt.

If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe (John Dies at the End, #4) by Jason Pargin Jason Pargin
If you want to play with a bit of psychosis, there's If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe by Jason Pargin. That potentially falls into FOMO (iykyk).

This is a tricky one. I've dumped a bunch of titles into the listopia (mostly non-fiction, some fiction) which seemed appropriate from various viewpoints. I hope it helps!

message 3: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease Lynn - I sometimes get JOMO (the joy of missing out). Like when people went and did something I had no interest in and I got to stay home in comfy clothes watching movies on the couch.

I think a book that gives you FOMO could be a book set in a place you've always wanted to visit. Or describes an activity you've always wanted to do. (Or at least that's my KIS take on it.)

JOMO, I love that. That's what I'm working towards. It's amazing the feeling of freedom you get when you stop doing things just to keep from rocking the boat (or whatever reason).

message 5: by Laura Ruth (new)

Laura Ruth Loomis This one is so vague. Thinking about doing a book on climate change, because of all the things we'll be missing out on if it isn't addressed.

message 6: by Diana (new)

Diana I think another way to think of this one is to look at super popular books that everyone has been reading and sharing and, for whatever reason, you haven't read it yet. One example would be the hype over Fourth Wing. Anyone that hasn't jumped on that bandwagon might use it here. Sunrise on the Reaping could be another.

Maybe even look at upcoming books that everyone is already talking about and you feel you need to read as to not be spoiled or feel like you're missing something. The last book is Leigh Bardugo's Alex Stern series is going to drop this year, so Dead Beat could work.

message 7: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Wolf I think for me, FOMO is about things I always think I want to be part of, but that never quite work out like I think they will if I try them. In my life, that's often been about alternative gatherings of various sorts (think hippy, paganish, new agey sort of things). Madame Sosostris and the Festival for the Brokenhearted looks perfect.

Bluebelle-the-Inquisitive (Catherine) This is such an interesting prompt to work with. I think it's going to end up being another cemeteries or libraries around the world book.

message 9: by Bea (new)

Bea I'm with you, LYNN. I don't have a FOMO response in general. Perhaps it is because I am an elder in life and fairly content; but, in this instance, it means that I have no idea what direction to go for a book.

message 10: by Eglė (new)

Eglė I think my interpretation of this prompt is similar to Sasha's, i.e. a book about a lifestyle or activities which sound appealing on paper and so give you a feeling of FOMO even if in reality it's probably not your thing. My immediate thought was something like Crazy Rich Asians OR the complete opposite - moving to the country and becoming a farmer 😁

message 11: by Joanna G (new)

Joanna G Wasn't sure what to do for this, but just thought of a sneaky way I could fill it - for any book my book clubs pick, I'd have FOMO on the discussion we'll have if I don't read it.

message 12: by Diane (new)

Diane I think any book about something fun you would love to be doing would make you have FOMO....

message 13: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Marcolongo I am going to read The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks by Greer Hendricks

message 14: by Theresa (new)

Theresa This will be me reading an author or book thzt is recently publish and everyone is reading, those super buzzy books, and it just doesn't appeal to me.

This is a very subjective prompt.

message 15: by Erica (new)

Erica Dungeon Crawler Carl anyone?

message 16: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones Erica wrote: "Dungeon Crawler Carl anyone?"

LOL seems like everyone is raving about that one right now, and I AM starting to wonder if I'm missing out on something good ...

message 17: by Theresa (new)

Theresa There's a British author that fits my FOMO that I have no desire to read but is super popular: Colleen Hoover. That's my fallback here.

message 18: by Erica (new)

Erica I just read the first Dungeon Crawler last month and I was amazed. Anyway if you’ve ever played video games and watched some reality tv you should be able to understand it. It is a dystopian and a bit of the horror genre if that’s not your thing then maybe stay away.

message 19: by Kara (new)

Kara I'm trying to decide if The Big Door Prize would work for this. I don't know if it makes me feel FOMO, but based on the description it seems like a lot of the characters are having FOMO.
My other option is to read something about someone travelling somewhere I want to go.

message 20: by Ira (new)

Ira I think I'm just going with a super popular book that I'm interested in. When everyone is talking about a book, I want to know what the fuss is about, so that makes me feel FOMO.

message 21: by Cyndy (new)

Cyndy Ira wrote: "I think I'm just going with a super popular book that I'm interested in. When everyone is talking about a book, I want to know what the fuss is about, so that makes me feel FOMO."

I like this idea! I was also thinking about traveling and some place I haven't been or didn't fully explore when I was there.

message 22: by Ron (new)

Ron Going with an intense nonfiction for this prompt. I've seen this book a lot lately, so it's definitely one of those FOMO moments for me.

White Storm: How Racism Poisoned American Democracy

White Storm How Racism Poisoned American Democracy by Martin Gelin

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer T. As a horror fan I’ve been seeing this a lot, think I’m going with it even though it’s almost 900 pages!

King Sorrow by Joe Hill

message 24: by Jessica (last edited Nov 26, 2025 02:20PM) (new)

Jessica Tack I struggle with this one!

I don't know if I should interpret it as, "a book everyone else is reading and talking about, so I have FOMO that I'm missing out on that specific book experience," OR "a book dealing with a topic that makes me feel FOMO on missing out on the subject of the book."

I *think* I'm going with the latter, and reading about a subject that makes me feel FOMO. I'm picking
The Language of Tattoos 130 Symbols and What They Mean by Nick Schonberger .
As a tattoo lover, I am always eagerly anticipating my next tattoo and feel like I can never have enough money or skin to get all the tattoos I'd want. I'm sure this book will contain several tattoos or genres of tattoo that will make me feel that pining envy, or FOMO feeling!

message 25: by Denise (new)

Denise I am going to read My Bookstore: Writers Celebrate Their Favorite Places to Browse, Read, and Shop because I would not want to miss out on a great bookstore

message 26: by LeahS (new)

LeahS I read Butter, actually for the ATY prompt 'Something edible in the title' but the descriptions of food in the book definitely made me feel I was missing out on not eating that meal there and then. I was completely absorbed in this book, and I suppose it has several characters who have FOMO about various things.

Okay, THAT book is PERFECT!

The Pampered Librarian This prompt has had me exasperated for the past two months. I just decided to put this title to fulfill it LOL
Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone (Ernest Cunningham, #1) by Benjamin Stevenson

message 29: by Aquaria (last edited Feb 17, 2026 02:37AM) (new)

Aquaria I got over FOMO in, oh, 1962...the year I was born. I never have cared what other people were doing or up to, and I cared even less about fitting in with people who cared about something so vacuous.

I guess it's supposed to be a book that is 'hot' or that 'everyone' (WTF WHO?) is 'talking about.' Sigh. Most tiresome. Maybe something from the NYT bestseller list.

If NF counts, maybe I'll slot The Body Keeps the Score in here. I see that on a bunch of 'hot reads' lists.

Brandon Harbeke Aquaria wrote: "I got over FOMO in, oh, 1962...the year I was born. I never have cared what other people were doing or up to, and I cared even less about fitting in with people who cared about something so vacuous..."

Maybe you could slot in a highly anticipated read here. You could have the fear of missing out on a good book for its own sake.

I used How to Honeymoon Alone for this prompt because the resort and activities available there sounded fantastic.

Denise Aquaria wrote: "I got over FOMO in, oh, 1962...the year I was born. I never have cared what other people were doing or up to, and I cared even less about fitting in with people who cared about something so vacuous..."

I totally agree with your outlook. I don't fear missing out on something "they" think is cool. I twisted the prompt and slotted in a book with a list of books I was already planning to read because the closest I can get is "fear I will die before all the best books are read" ...which will inevitably happen.

Lilith Denise wrote: "Aquaria wrote: "I got over FOMO in, oh, 1962...the year I was born. I never have cared what other people were doing or up to, and I cared even less about fitting in with people who cared about some..."

I agree with both of you.

I just picked out a NF book about travel to really cool places I'd love to go.

message 33: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR I feel like this is such a personal choice because not everyone feels like they are missing out, and not about the same things.

I think this will definitely be one of those I just come across organically. Especially after looking at the Listopia and not being inspired by anything there.

message 34: by Theresa (new)

Theresa Heated Rivalry - during January, in a news conference just prior to the blizzard that hit that weekend, NYC's new young mayor suggested all download this ebook from NYPL system and read it. Over 5000 downloads! How much more FOMO can you get?

message 35: by Laura Ruth (new)

Laura Ruth Loomis I also went with the Heated Rivalry series. I kept hearing about it, so I wound up watching and enjoying the HBO series. I started with the first book, Game Changer.

message 36: by Kendra (new)

Kendra I went with Project Hail Mary because the movie is coming out soon, and despite the fact that I bought a copy of the book shortly after it was published, I hadn't read it yet.

Side note, I tend to side with Wednesday Addams antisocial take - She has FOBI - fear of being included.😉
