Lyn Elliott Wonderful, thoughtful review Jim. This is a disturbing book for all the reasons you have given, as well as the awful things that happen to individuals along the way.
I've only been to India once, but don't think I've ever been impressed just by its 'romance'. The horrors of systemic poverty inevitable under the caste system are aggravated by corruption and abuse of power.
And yes, the signs are loud and clear in the US. It's a frightening time in the world.
As I write, Israel and the US are attacking Iran, and claim to have killed Ayatollah Khomeini among other senior figures. what will happen next?

Jim Puskas Observing the glee of many (especially right here in Ottawa, where we have a substantial population of ex-pat Iranians) brings to mind a film where a bunch of cops were celebrating the outbreak of war between rival criminal gangs. A few gangsters killed off, what could possibly go wrong?
That didn't end well either.
Rohinton Mistry has greatly enriched Canada's literary life. He might not be popular with India's current regime. Inconvenient truths.
