most of us got a goodreads message in pms

It has been speculated due to the amount of online Pedos and scam messages that users send that they are just going to remove the feature completely. Though I don’t get why they would do that instead of just getting moderators to moderate chats.

their safety system is really bad to begin with. it takes them forever to remove pedos and alts

i think they're looking for the easy way out. which i get, but also i don't. pms are the most necessary form of support. do i really have to broadcast my message to all my friends every time i say something? unless i create a secret group with each of my friends?

They could literally just add an option so people can choose who can message them. Like friends only. I've also never received a single spam message on GR. I get more spam messages on LinkedIn lol

Agreed! Plus,if you think a member is being a creep,you can report and block them.

actually, that setting already exists! you're given three options in the account settings when asked about who can pm you: anbody, nobody, just friends.

that's fine, i'm not on amazon either. you could continue your involvement in this by rating goodreads 1 star and reviewing it on play store/app store!!

THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE RIGHT PLACE.. BUT I'LL GO AHEAD SINCE THERE ARE QUITE A FEW PLACES TO TALK ABOUT AMAZONS RIDUCULOUS SHOW OF AUTHORITY.
WE HAVE BEEN SHARING ALTERNATE IDEAS OF OTHER SITES... AND SIGNING PROTEST FORMS... ALL GOOD IDEAS.
WHAT I'M NOT SEEING (AND MAYBE ITS NOT POSSIBLE) ARE IDEAS FOR WORK AROUNDS IF YOU WANT TO TRY TO STAY HERE? FOR EXAMPLE: DMS ARE BEING REMOVED,,, SO WHAT ABOUT PPL OVERWHELMING THE SITE WITH CREATING TONS OF CLOSED GROUPS WITH ONLY 2 PPL IN THEM TO REPLACE OUR DMS? OR OTHER IDEAS????🤷🏼‍♀️

closed groups of 2 or 3 to do buddy reads may work. it's the initial contact with other interested members that needs to be resolved .

No, there has been no new news on the DMs update..

Expect to start seeing either yourself or friends of yours no longer being able to send or respond to messages within the new year. The site is rather large, so it will take time for all new changes to be implemented all at once. Some will experience not being able to send a msg while still receiving them, while others will not be able to do either.

This will occur to some degree until everyone's personal DMs are no more..

We have one week and then DM's will be gone. Received the email just a few minutes ago. I replied back and asked them to reconsider using a template from a friend. Don't exect it to do anything.

We have already begun making contingency plans to move our community elsewhere if these changes go forward. That is not what we want — we want to remain here — but we cannot continue to build and grow a community on a platform that steadily removes the tools we rely on.

Our members have supported Amazon for years through Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and book purchases that were influenced and driven by Goodreads communities. That support is not automatic — it exists because readers feel connected here. If those connections are dismantled, so is the loyalty that comes with them.

We urge you to listen to your users. Please protect the tools that make Goodreads a true community and not just a database. The future of this platform depends on whether you choose to support the readers who built it.

some of my friends have dealt with pedos on here and tbh pms helped them get through that bc you can talk to other people without it being broadcasted to a whole group of others

I'm very frustrated reading some of the comments about pedos getting access to members through pm's. This should NEVER be a problem, if only the member had set up their profile and DM settings right in the first place. Because many members didn't set their privacy settings correctly when they joined, and/or befriended questionable ppl (that turned out to be online predators) and didn't make use of the tools already available on GR to them to block these ppl, ALL of us are now having to suffer the consequences for that.
There is simply no reason for DM's to be removed, period.
Every member that joins GR has the responsibility to handle their privacy correctly through their settings on their profiles, period.
But now it's too late and here we are, losing our DM privileges (along with our privacy).

It is disappointing. What is honestly more disappointing is that Goodreads does not listen to their user base.

So true, Bill👍They (since owned by Amazon) truly do not care anything about how we think or feel about what they're doing to our Community. It's only about the bottom line for them-selling books. 😕

It is interesting that yes, the compose and reply buttons are now gone in all of our messages, so we are no longer able to send out messages of any kind. But the reply button still remains under the Goodreads messages that were sent out to us, via Goodreads through their account.

I propose while that button is still there, that everyone flood it with your feelings about this new change.

Some of you may have received this GR email yesterday, some may not have.. So I am posting it here for you all to view..

"Psst... The Did Not Finish (DNF) shelf is coming soon. You're hearing about it first because you already track books you started and set aside.

Things to Know

If you created an exclusive custom shelf named exactly "did not finish," "dnf," "abandoned," "unfinished," "didn-t-finish," or "dropped", we'll automatically convert it to the new default Did Not Finish shelf. Your reviews, ratings, and reading history stay with your book.
If you created a tag or non-exclusive custom shelf, it will remain unchanged with one exception. Those currently named exactly "did-not-finish" will be automatically renamed to "did-not-finish-2" to avoid duplication.

If you prefer to keep your current setup, rename your shelf or tag to anything else before Feb. 28.

What to Expect

As we prepare for launch, your existing shelf or tag may show a different name or appear non-editable. This is expected as we work behind the scenes to ensure your books, ratings, and reviews transfer smoothly. Don't worry! You can still add and remove books from your shelf as usual during this time.

FYI- If you guys want to avoid any mishaps with the conversion, change the name of your current DNF shelf to anything other than what is listed above. But DO IT BEFORE FEB 28th..

This way after the conversion is completed, you can just keep your own DNF shelf as is, or move things over manually to the default DNF shelf if you wish... I say this because every time GR has said they will do an auto shift or update with our shelves, they've always messed up something... Either deleted it, got the dates wrong when you originally added it, all of that.

Decisions

Replying to the question about Hardcover (msg 15) — Hardcover is solid, good community features. StoryGraph is also great if you want strong reading stats and mood tracking. If the main thing you're after is just a clean, private book tracker with no account and no ads (i.e. replacing the shelving/tracking side of GR rather than the social side), Leafed (leafedapp.com) is worth checking out — it's an indie iOS app built specifically for that.

ATTN: I swear we need to start calling this place Glitch-Reads.

GR has a major glitch that has been ongoing for the past 2 weeks. It has now reached our GR email as well.. Many people are not getting notifications on when someone leaves them a comment directly to their profile pages.. You are now NOT getting group emails from your group Moderators when they are sent out. Some may appear days later or not at all.

There is no ETA on when this glitch will be corrected.

If you are a moderator, please pass this info on to your groups.
