I'm intrigued by the combination you describe--but no, I don't like "pay-attention-to-me writing," as you put it so well! (I felt that way about Ocean Vuong's debut, "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous.")
Sometimes it merits the attention…but I’m often put off by writers who seem to be trying too hard to impress me! (And I agree with you about Ocean Vuong’s debut.)
