Karen Watkins Great review, Natalie: agreed! Will be reading (listening!) immediately — on Libro.fm, because I love Indie bookstores & Audio.

I’ve always wondered why so much focus is on probable 2,000-3,000 who died in 79 AD when Vesuvius erupted. So little public info really makes those who LIVED feel real — as well as those who did not. Glad for this opening into more.

The nearest vivid example of making humans feel real was at an MFA Pompeii exhibit long ago, with colorful graffiti scrawled on a wall 2,000 years ago — with an ad & drawing — for Pompeii’s “matchless” fish sauce, Garum or Liquamen. Psyched to immerse myself in this perfect Pompeii-Geek exploration, both real and imagined. The 17,000 people who escaped & lived fascinate me too: richer? Smarter? Owned a boat? Walking in Pompeii and neighboring Herculaneum is among the most fascinating ancient experiences.
