Elaine - Splashes Into Books It was suggested we should have an authors section where authors can promote their books or similar. We do have some authors here and we'd love them to feel welcome to post about their books in this area.

Please let our members know details about your book such as the title and author as well as sharing any links to it.

When sharing links to NetGalley, please give members the option of reading up on the book without automatically having it added to their list of books to be read!

Feeling peeved after someone ignored this request, I may consider deleting posts which only contain links which automatically add books to our shelves even if we were only trying to find out more about the book. You have been warned!

I will try to remember to archive posts which are links to books no longer available on NetGalley!

Carlene Just wanted to post that I cleaned up the author thread today, 9/27. Anything that is now listed as unavailable on Netgalley has been moved to the Archived Authors post :)

Looks like everything is current and available as request, read now, or wish for it.

Tyler Gray Yes! I had clicked a link awhile ago on twitter to netgalley to see what a book was about after seeing the title. I hadn't heard of it so I just wanted to check it out not knowing the link would auto add it to my shelf! I did see I have another book by that author as want to read here on goodreads so I figured, alright i'll give it a shot and see if I like it but I didn't actually want that book. Now I feel like I have to read it and I can't seem to shake the bitter feeling of that since I didn't want it in the first place, which is not helping the book.

I had that with one book. I put the following in feedback to the publisher:

'I actually followed a link shared in NetGalley Readers on Goodreads to see if I wanted to read this book. Unfortunately, the link automatically added this book to my shelf - something that authors and publishers are asked NOT to do when sharing information about their book. I've looked at the extract and don't think this is something I would enjoy reading, so I haven't downloaded a copy of it.'

And in the review box typed:
'Just don't think this is my cup of tea, though it may well appeal to others. Good job that not everyone enjoys the same books! Unfortunately it won't let me post this without a star rating - I did try. I don't think it fair to rate something I haven't read all the way through, so please ignore my rating.'

I reluctantly gave it one star. This way I have provided feedback and don't have to read the book. Hope that helps!

Tyler Gray I didn't think of it at the time so I downloaded it thinking I had no choice but to read it (and to never click links to netgalley again). I can click delete on my kindle but just clicking it again redownloads it, I don't know how to actually get it off my tablet. I figure i'll give it a shot at some point, but it's not a high priority for me. Thanks though :)

If I end up DNFing it i'll say something along the lines of how I didn't actually want it where it was auto-added to my shelf and that it just wasn't for me. I won't rate it on goodreads if that happens and probably just go with a neutral 3 stars on netgalley and say to ignore my rating because of that, as netgalley requires a rating.

Like Lorrea mentioned, if the reader says you can, go ahead. But I have to tell you it's not the usual. I really don't mean to discourage you, I'd feel really happy for the contact. If I gave a higher rating (4 or 5*), I'm sure I'd love to have a direct means of communication with the author (especially to ask for ARCs in the future, lol). But really, I'd feel honored. Of course, I don't speak for everyone.

I've never received anything from the author themselves just for downloading, maybe the publisher reminding me to post a review around the publication date or inviting for blog tours but even that is rare.

Belinda Austin I don't understand, Elaine, what you mean by, "please give members the option of reading up on the book without automatically having it added to their list of books to be read!"? How would I mistakenly do this? I have two links to my Netgalley book, one is to redeem and the other is just a short link.

Does the redeem link automatically add it to your list?

I don't want to offend anyone by mistake.

Belinda,

Yes, the redeem link automatically adds it. We ask that you please put the synopsis of your novel in the body of your invite post and include the link to where the user can request the book. Redeem links often lead to frustration for both the reader and the author, as you will receive more non-reviews than reviews.

Belinda Austin Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

Ted Krever This is good information--I'm surprised I haven't seen this anywhere else.
I would have posted links to my books without ever considering they'd be making someone feel obligated. We all want readers but you want them to feel enthusiastic, not roped in.
I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to read it, Ted - glad you found it useful and understand why we felt the need to post it. :)

Carlene We're a bit behind on archiving things, sorry about that everyone. I have archived everything posted up until March 2019.

David MacNamera Hi everyone! What if an author has an ARC to share with readers but it is not yet on NetGalley, or won't be on NetGalley? I've tried registering with NetGalley through their Author page online, but information sent through their online response form just seems to fall down a black hole! Maybe I should call someone over there?
In the meantime, would it be appropriate for authors to offer new ARCS to reviewers here which they can request to be sent to them by email? Or does this community only want to see fully NetGalley registered ARCs for reviewing?

Other authors have started a new thread where they have posted the synopsis of their book and given members the option to get in touch with them to arrange distribution of ARCs, so we'd have no objection to you doing that. It is obviously entirely up to the member if they wish to contact you! Hope that helps.

Meryl Landau My latest women's fiction beach-read incorporating yoga/mindfulness, betrayal, forgiveness, friendship, and community, Yoga Bind, is now on NetGalley.

If you're into yoga practices and want to see how Janelle and her friends put them into play when their lives turn upside down, this is the book for you. Thanks in advance for any reads!

Liralen Mods, wondering if this note to authors should be updated? I wasn't on NetGalley in 2015, so I'm not sure exactly how widgets worked then, but these days clicking on a widget gives me the option to "Read It!" but the book isn't automatically added to my shelf. I've never seen one that worked otherwise. Unless I'm mistaken (and have just gotten lucky!), the bold note to authors in the original message may no longer be relevant.
