message 1: by Jake (new)

Jake I'm always interested in discussing other people's top 10 lists so please post yours! I know, at least for me, this list is always changing. It doesn't include any of the Dark Tower novels because there would be 3 or 4 of them on here and it would take over the whole list. Anyway, here's my list:

1 The Stand
2 The Shining
3 Duma Key
4 Pet Semetary
5 Needful Things
6 It
7 Bag of Bones
8 11/22/1963
9 Roadwork
10 Misery

The funny thing about my top 10 is that I wasn't a huge fan of some of these the first time I read them. I thought Pet Semetary was just okay the first time I read it; definitely not in my top 10. I read it for the second time recently and absolutely loved it!

Honorable mentions:
Wizard and Glass
The Dark Tower
Song of Susannah
Salem's Lot
The Green Mile
Different Seasons
The Dead Zone
Night Shift
Black House

message 2: by ElleEm (new)

ElleEm Man, that's really tough to narrow down but I'm going to try. I am also going to include specific novella's and short stories in this list.

1. It
2. The Talisman
3. Duma Key
4. Pet Sematary
5. The Body
6. 11/22/63
7. The Long Walk
8. Dolan's Cadillac
9. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemtion
10. Mrs. Todd's Shortcut

And I could rearrange the last 6 and be happy with the order. And these could easily be on the list as well.

The Stand
The Drawing of the Three
Salem's Lot

message 3: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Hetzel My top TEN would be :

1. MISERY 2. GERALD'S GAME 3. DOLORES CLAIBORNE 4. ROSE MADDER 5. BAG OF BONES
6. COLORADO KID 7. LISEY'S STORY 8. ON WRITING
9. THE SHINING 10. HIS NEW TRILOGIES e.g. MR. MERCEDES, etc.

message 4: by Trinity (new)

Trinity I've only read 3 but I'll rate them from best to worst

1. Pet sematary
2. The shining
3. Carrie

All were very good

message 5: by Hunter (new)

Hunter Similar to Trinity, I've only read 7 of King's novels and 1 short story collection as I'm reading through King's bibliography in order and I have only finished up to The Long Walk (I'm waiting for The Dead Zone :( ), so I will include 3 short stories from Night Shift.

1. Salem's Lot
2. Carrie
3. The Long Walk
4. Joyland (First book I read before I decided to read King in order)
5. Quitter's Inc. (From Night Shift)
6. Children of the Corn (From Night Shift)
7. The Shining
8. Rage
9. Battleground (From Night Shift)
10. The Stand

message 6: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Like so many others, I reread King obsessively, so my order can change any given month, but in current order (I think)

1. 'Salem's Lot
2. Cujo
3. Lisey's Story
4. The Talisman
5. Duma Key
6. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
7. The Colorado Kid
8. Different Seasons
9. Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales
10. The Shining

message 7: by Jake (last edited Apr 03, 2017 05:17PM) (new)

Jake Love the comments so far! Awesome to see so many different books! I think the next list will be top 10 short stories!

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I'm following Jake's approach of excluding The Dark Tower series from my top ten list. I love that series too much and it would absolutely dominate my list. I struggled enough as it is getting my list down to ten ;)

1. It
2. The Stand
3. Dolores Claiborne
4. Duma Key
5. Rose Madder
6. 11/22/63
7. Firestarter
8. Mr. Mercedes
9. Insomnia
10. Revival

message 9: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I didn't include any DT because I feel like they are a whole thing on their own. How do you include them on a list? I do love them though. I didn't mean to imply I didn't.

message 10: by Scott (new)

Scott Rees 1. The stand (unabridged version)
2. It
3. Misery
4. The green mile
5. The long walk
6. Blaze
7. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption
8. Rage
9. The shining
10. The mist

There were a few other novels/stories that for the most part rated higher on my list only to drop off my top ten due to ( in my opinion ) a disappointing ending. Also I have included The Green Mile as one complete story, even though I have only read it in it's serialized form I will always consider it as one complete story.

message 11: by Kerry (new)

Kerry Christian I am so happy to see Rose Madder on a couple people's lists. It has always been one of my favorites!

1. The Stand
2. The Shining
3. Rose Madder
4. Misery
5. The Tommyknockers
6. IT
7. The Gunslinger
8. Insomnia
9. Carrie
10. 11/22/63

Didn't know if story collections could be used but Different Seasons is AMAZING!!

message 12: by Jake (new)

Jake For us diehard King fanatics, narrowing the list down to 10 is very difficult! I've read and reread (some 3 times!) almost all of his work. Just like some people I see here, my list is ever changing. It's okay that people used short stories and novellas but I will be starting a thread for each of them based on all of the responses this thread has received! If nothing else, it's fun to look through all of these stories and TRY to narrow it down to a top 10.

Top 5 things I love about this thread:

1. All of the different responses
2. Seeing The Colorado Kid more than once
3. Seeing Rose Madder more than once
4. Seeing Blaze, The Tommyknockers, and Rage on the list
5. Seeing The Stand is not on everyone's list (#1 on mine)

message 14: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa I actually did a top 40 list as some of you probably remember. Anyway, I just can't stay with 10 but I'll stop at 15. Not sure why the Colorado Kid isn't on this list Kandice. Maybe it's too old. Anyway,
1 Wizard & Glass
2 It
3 The Shining
4 Salam’s Lot
5 On Writing
6 Bag of Bones
7 Different Seasons
8 The Stand
9 11/22/1963
10 The Long Walk
11 The Girl Who Love Tom Gordon
12 Misery
13 Gerald's Game
14 Full Dark No Stars
15 Duma Key

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooooh, nice topic!

4) Duma Key
5) The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
6) Doctor Sleep
7) Lisey's Story
8) Rose Madder
9) Just After Sunset
10) Hearts in Atlantis

It's pretty hard to assign an order, but those are my favorites. Of course, it was difficult to eliminate some of his others, too.

message 19: by mrbooks (last edited Apr 11, 2017 02:56PM) (new)

mrbooks You are asking the impossible for me I have been reading Stephen King for at least 40 years and have read all but 4 of his books but I will try to narrow it down to 10.

1. The Stand
2. Carrie
3. Salem's Lot
4. The Green Mile
5. The eye of the Dragon
6. The Mist
7. The Tommy Knockers
8. Insomnia
9. The Long Walk
10. The cycle of the Werewolf (Silver Bullet)

It was a real struggle doing this I have read all these books multiple times as I have all his books there isn't one I have not read at least twice.

Mrbrooks, now I'm interested. Which 4 have you not read? I just got into King 4 years ago and haven't put him down since! Read most twice and a couple 3 times! By the way, I love that The Long Walk is on a ton of people's lists!

message 21: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I would also like to know which 4 mrbrooks hasn't read!

I've personally reread all of Kings, in some cases many times, with the exception of Blockade Billy. I have reread Morality in the back of BB, though. I think the bonus was better than the actual book.

message 22: by Katharina (new)

Katharina Hello to all - I am new in this group and haven't figured out everything yet..
I read pretty much all of S.k: books, several more than once.
My Top 10:
1.) IT
2.) The Stand
3.) Dolores Claiborne
4.) Misery
5.) Insomnia
6.) Salem's Lot
7.) The Talisman
8.) Can I trick here a little bit and just call it the "Dark Tower-Series"?
9.) Needful Things
10.) The shining

Here are the four Stephen King on writing, Gerald's Game, Joyland, and the Colorado Kid. Oh and Danes macabre I started Gerald's game but after a few chapters gave up on it.

I could probably list every book of Stephen Kings but they only limited me to 10 Bummer.

Joyland and On Writing are 2 of my favorites! And Gerald's Game took me a couple tries to get through as well but I ended up really liking it! And yes! All of us King fanatics could list so many! It's hard to narrow it down to a top 10 and that's why i thought it would be fun.

Nicole Power Did anyone else spend 20 minutes agonizing and relabeling? But I finally did it.

Like Jake, I'm going to exclude the DT series, because it would dominate at least half of the list. (Edit. I couldn't take NOT seeing the Waste Lands on this list, so I let myself do just one DT book).

1 The Waste Lands
2 Salem's Lot
3 IT
4 The Stand
5 Black House
6 The Shining
7 The Green Mile
8 Different Seasons (The Body, specifically)
9 Doctor Sleep
10 Duma Key

I just bought 3-4 novels I haven't read yet, one of which is 11/22/63 (which I see on a lot of your top 10s). It will be fun to come back to this thread and update when/if the list changes!

message 29: by Jerri (new)

Jerri The Stand (IMHO) is the best book ever written but King's short stories will always be amongst my favorites.

1. The Stand

7. Gerald’s Game
8. The Eyes of the Dragon

Better check out THE LONG WALK too, Nicole. Probably King's first novel... a Bachman Book. I'm gratified to see this one on so many lists. For a long time I thought I was the only person who thought it was incredible.

You only spent 20 min I sat here arguing with myself for a good hour over my choices and lost on several books. Yes I can lose arguments against my self sad I know. I did like 11-22-63, but I am more partial to his older books.

Ms M, good choices each and every one. The problem is there are far to many Stephen King books and most of them are good. I am sure you had the same problem as the rest of us did in choosing just 10.

message 33: by Aymen (new)

Aymen Ben cheikh I will try:
- Shining
- 22-11-63
- Bag of Bones

- Blaze

Greg Salem's Lot
It
The Stand
Pet Sematary
The Shining
The Green Mile

Man, that was tough. Could make a case for a whole load of others worthy of being there.

I'm so happy to see Salem's Lot so high on some people's Top 10.

I can't pinpoint exactly why I love that book so much more than others, it's just special. Maybe the way he writes fear so well, or just that there are kid-monsters, which are way more terrifying than adult monsters... or maybe its simple and just that I like vampires (that don't sparkle). Or I just like Ben and Mark, maybe. Either way, it's the only book I get a craving to read again every year.

I think I said this on another thread but, for me, it's how he made the actual town itself the main character, something I only cottoned onto when I first reread as an adult. He just builds the story so slowly and expertly before things start kicking off in the last third or so. You are spot on, Nicole, it is just special.

message 39: by mrbooks (new)

mrbooks Greg I concur with you on that, the town is the key to the whole story take away the town then it is just another blood suckers story.

When I read Salem's Lot I feel my self falling into the town finding myself fearing the sight of the Marsden house but unable to look away.

It is one of those stories that grabs you by the throat and won't and wont let go.

message 40: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Power Greg,
That's a great point! I think that really is a big part of it. The small town really is like a living person and you feel like you know it so well by the end. I feel he does the same thing with Derry, he just makes these places so alive.

message 41: by AMiddaugh (new)

Read me two times Hi everyone! Here I am, doing the impossible King top 10! It's too hard to choose only 10 bookes, but I'll try my very best...
As many other before me, I can't list The Dark Tower series cause it's too wonderful to be compared to any other book.

NB: apart from the first one, which is one of my all time fave, the other are pretty much in random order.

Ok, let's start!

1 - IT
2 - Pet Sematary
3 - The Long Walk
4 - Bag of Bones
5 - Salem's Lot
6 - Different Seasons
7 - The Dark Half (my first, 24y ago)
8 - Night Shift
9 - Storm of the Century (best villain ever!)
10 - The Green Mile

Honorable Mentions to:
- Skeleton crew
- Rage
- Duma Key (but I don't consider the ending, one of the weakest of our King)
- The stand (pretty much perfect until the hand of god -.-)

Now I'm tired. I think I'll go back to sleep XD

I look forward to revisiting and revising this list when I am done my reads and re-reads.
