I highly recommend The Founding of a Nation: A History of the American Revolution, 1763-1776, The New Nation: A History of the United States During the Confederation, 1781-89, and The Articles of Confederation, all by Merrill Jensen. They go into great detail on the historical events and the nuts and bolts of politics from the French and Indian Wars until the Constitution, and they're written from a broadly Beardian/revisionist perspective that emphasizes the class basis of the warring political coalitions during the period.
