It wasn’t that I was looking for a standalone experience. It was more that this book didn’t feel like it needed to be part of a series, assuming all the books in the planned series are the same size.
It felt short and could have been longer, with more character development and setting, so it read more like a fuller-length novella instead of a novelette. You are competing with other 70K plus word novels in this genre.

My plan was for a trilogy, and this book is the first one, so the cliffhanger was a deliberate choice to carry the story forward. I understand how that can feel unsatisfying if you were hoping for a more standalone experience.
I have heard your comments about character and world depth, and those elements do develop more fully as the story continues.
If you do decide to continue with book two, I hope it offers a more satisfying expansion of the story. I truly appreciate your support of indie authors by reading and sharing your perspective.
