IMHO, the attitudes that you describe are what one would expect from indigenous people (which the British and Scots are on their native island) when faced with an influx of settlers from other countries. IMHO, the marginalized white working class opposed to this form of settler colonialism is similar to the reaction of third world people who believe that they are poor because white colonialists stole their country's resources.
My education is in the social sciences (political science, economics) so I'm intrigued by this type of social dynamic, but not judgmental about it. But in all societies there are classes of people and mobility between classes is only partially determined by individual effort. So, an "I am a victim" attitude among some members of a marginalized group is to be expected/
