This is a lovely honest thoughtful review about a very well written memoir. Thank you for your insight.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your comment.
(I have to say, Boxer dogs are just the best aren't they? We have a nine year old and he's just the sweetest, funniest goofball!)
Wonderful review, Zoë! You write in a way that makes every word go straight to the heart. ❤️ I like what you wrote about how abuse and neglect can coexist with moments of affection. It’s so true, and something I don’t feel outsiders really understand. Everyone is so quick to ask questions like “Why didn’t you leave?” or “Why didn’t you say anything?” 🫂 Most of the time, you cling to those bright spots in the bad situation. Bright spots that you’re happy to let “blur” the worse parts, as a way to make the bad balance feel more “normal.” Even though you’re slowly dying on the inside..❤️
Tindra, what you said there is so painfully true. It's such a common response from other people to ask abuse survivors 'why didn't you leave.' I even had a family member tell me once 'well, it couldn't have been that bad if you stayed.'
However, the more I read books like this, the more I am starting to accept that other people's POV say more about their lack of understanding than their inability to empathise. As you say, 'even though you're slowly dying on the inside.'
Beautifully written review! It’s wonderful you were able to connect and feel the story deep within ❤️
